List: Ten Great Rear Seats

As drivers, we very rarely get to sample the nice rear seats that automakers put into their latest and greatest cars. Whether it’s for the purpose of luxury or functionality, rear seats have come a long way from the standard benches of yore, and this list is a true testament to some cars being better suited for passengers, rather than those behind the steering wheel.

Report: Mercedes-Benz Working On CLS Estate To Rival 5-Series GT, A7 Sportback

The CLS Estate will take a lot of its design direction from the original Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION (shown above), and its underpinnings will be a heavily revised version of the E-Class platform. In speaking with Autocar, a source at Mercedes-Benz says that the CLS Estate has been in the works since around 2004, and that a concept version was originally supposed to be shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Tested: 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible

This is not a drive feature exclusive, no, but we were going 87 miles per hour while at the wheel of the new “A207” Mercedes E-Class convertible that lands in North America in June 2010 after a January 11 European launch. Driving “no hands”, too. Beside us, riding shotgun, was a beautifully stoic and bald woman named Tanja. We exchanged no words, enjoying the ride of the open-top Merc at the dawn of a new winter.

Report: Mercedes-Benz Developing Twin-Turbo V-8 To Replace 6.2-Liter AMG Engine

Mercedes-Benz’s line of AMG cars are potent performers, and the much-loved 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 lies at the heart of every AMG currently available (save the SLK and G, of course). And while we’ve grown very fond of this sweet-sounding mill over the past years, a report from Edmunds’ Inside Line reveals that our 6.2-liter bomber might not be around much longer.

Brabus Debuts 200 mph GLK V12 In Dubai

We like the Mercedes-Benz GLK well enough. The small SUV’s chunky styling has split opinion at the Winding Road office, but we all agree that it’s a pretty good steer, and a really nice size for real world SUV use. None of us have ever requested a 750 horsepower, 995 pound-feet of torque, V-12 engined version of the GLK. Of course, none of us work for the sublimely nutty Brabus, either.

Driven: 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The new aluminum SLS built in Sindelfingen, Germany stays dead even with the carbon-fiber SLR built in the UK until early this year. Though the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 in the SLS has 54 less horsepower (down 9 percent) and 96 fewer pound-feet of torque (down 17 percent) than the supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 in the SLR, the SLS weighs 328 pounds less (also down 9 percent), has much finer dynamics, and better technology. Acceleration on both cars to 60 mph therefore stands at 3.6 seconds and both lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:40. The SLS just does it all with better behavior and efficiency.

Driven: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 Sport

With the new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz is doing its best to get beyond the “middle child” reputation that most cars in this class seem to have. Neither fish nor fowl, mid-sized Euro sedans (e.g. 5-Series, A6 and S-Type) have lacked the sportiness of their smaller brethren, while also giving up the luxury and presence of the parent company’s flagship sedan. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, we thought the last generation E-Class was rather bland and characterless.

So, when we found ourselves liking the new E350 Sport quite a bit, we were pleasantly surprised. It is still a middle of the road kind of car, but this time M-B dialed in some attractions for the driver that greatly helped us make sense of the car. If you want a good daily driver, not a four-door sports car, this one is worth a look.
