List: Ten Best Vehicles For Tailgating

The pro and college football seasons are well and truly underway, which means if you haven’t been, you need to start thinking about tailgates. Keys to a good tailgate vehicle include storage, looks, and seating among others. Oh yeah, and as per WR rules, they need to be pretty good to drive too. Go Blue!

List: Ten Cars That Would Make Great Convertibles

It’s no secret that there is near-universal love for convertibles here in the Winding Road offices (with the notable exception of cabriolet-hater John Beltz Snyder). In fact, we have an unwritten rule here at WR HQ, that unless it is raining, the top must be down, regardless of other weather conditions. The problem is, convertibles are, for the most part, a precious commodity.

GM Teases Cadillac ATS Sedan, Announces Production Plans For 2012

GM’s product renaissance is set to continue well into 2012, with the launch of two new Cadillac models. The ATS will be a dedicated competitor to other entry-level, rear-drive luxury sport sedans. As of right now, the ATS’s launch is planned for the summer of 2012, with production planned at the Lansing, Michigan Grand River Assembly Plant. We can’t see much from the teaser image, but smallest Caddy looks to refine the CTS’s design language, with similar sharp angles and creases. We’d expect to see the ATS debut at one of the big four American auto shows (LA, Chicago, New York, or Detroit).

Driven: 2012 Cadillac SRX

If you ever needed proof that crossovers are the next big thing in luxury, than here it is: as of 2010 the crossover segment constitutes almost 25 percent of the sales of the luxury market. It should come as no surprise then, that every manufacturer that styles itself with luxury pretensions currently offers a car-based, tall wagon loaded with tech and comfort features for the affluent buyer.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V

Unfortunately for me, I have, far and away, the longest commute of anyone at the Winding Road office in Michigan, especially when it comes to the afternoon rush. Spanning 45 miles, my drive home averages 90 minutes. On a good day, I can make it in an hour. On a bad day, it can be anywhere from two to three hours, depending on traffic and construction (winter is an entirely different issue, where I’ve spent upwards of eight hours commuting for an eight-hour workday). So I spend a lot more time in stop-and-go traffic than either John or Seyth, and therefore, I appreciate a gearbox like the one on the CTS-V just a little bit more than they do.

2011 Winding Road Involvement Index Awards

Involvement matters. That’s the heart of the sermon we’ve been preaching for the last six years now. To drive fast is fun, to go around a corner neatly is admirable, to be luxurious is lovely; but to do all of those things and more in a way that enhances the driver/machine relationship is special indeed. When we first started Winding Road, we made it clear that we wanted to have a conversation with readers about the vehicles that we found to be exciting, not because they measured well, but because they inveigled many of our senses most of the time we were driving.

Blog: Car Shopping, Differentiation, And The Mazda6

If you have or are actually shopping for a mid-sized, mid-priced sedan, what are the “need to know” items that you want us to delineate in a review of a car like this? What are the “make or break” criteria you’re looking for? Or do you agree with the first impression that there isn’t much difference on offer here, and you decide by price and small personal preferences? Leave your answers below, in our comments section.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

The greatest thing about the CTS-V Wagon isn’t the way it performs; it’s the reaction it generates on the faces of people you take for rides, pass on the freeway, and cruise by on the street.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV AWD Platinum

Driving dynamics are not the point here, so we’ll keep our comments on the Escalade short. It is built on a truck platform and it feels like it. Modern trucks being very accomplished vehicles that isn’t all bad, but don’t expect to see the ESV score very high on our Involvement Index. You wouldn’t buy this instead of a sports sedan, of course, but users who don’t need all the functionality should know that the ride is just okay, the acceleration is modest, and the weight transfer borders on the ponderous.

Driven: 2011 Year In Review(s)

2011 has been a busy year in the Winding Road offices, with auto shows, new model launches, and the usual comings and goings of the automotive industry filling the virtual pages of our website. Even with all the activity, there has been a near-constant stream of automobiles filtering in and out of our parking lot, giving us no shortage of vehicular material to write about.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

The CTS Coupe may not rip as hard as the V version, but that’s just fine. It is still really good. The rear wheels will still break loose just a little during takeoff, and power seems to come to a crescendo in the middle part of the rev range. The ride is still comfortable and smooth, with relative quiet, but when pushed a bit, the CTS is not afraid to get aggressive. Shifts could come a little quicker from the steering-wheel-mounted buttons—and I’d still prefer proper paddles—but it’s not a slouch, and will shift cleanly through the gears as long as you pay close attention, or just let it shift on its own.

Detroit 2011: Cadillac Shows Off Its New Racer In The Motor City

Few cars at this year’s North American International Auto Show created as much of a stir as the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Race Car. Fortunately, we were on hand to capture images of the new SCCA World Challenge GT Series contender.

First Look: Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Race Car

We normally focus our coverage on street-legal cars here at Winding Road, but every so often a race version of one of our favorites comes along and we feel compelled to cover it. Such is the case with this, the Cadillac CTS-V race car, which is destined to start competing in the 2011 SCCA World Challenge GT Series.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

After driving the CTS-V coupe, the Cadillac CTS wagon feels like a completely different car. It feels a lot less like a coffin, to start, and the atmosphere inside the cabin is brighter and much more relaxed. This is partly due to the extra space and breathing room, but also simply because it lacks some of the more hardcore elements of the V. It still has the nice interior, lots of nice touch points, and the comfortable ride which filters out a lot of the feeling of the road.

Driven: 2010 Year In Review(s)

It’s getting to be that time of year again—the holiday season is upon us, snowy weather is well and truly on its way, and another calendar is due to be replaced. A time to take stock of the year that’s passed, and look forward to the new one at hand, and all that.
