Top Ten Dead Car Models We Miss Most

Bring these cars back. Seriously, there are some car models that, for a multitude of reasons, seem to resonate with the car enthusiast nation after they’re no longer available for us to buy new. Some on our list are obvious choices that have been crowed about for years, others are a bit more subtle, but all are worthy of resurrection.

Secondhand Gems: Lottery Win Cars

It has been a long, brutal winter. Spring thus far hasn’t been much better, with most folks still dealing with cold, or wicked storms, or record flooding, or a combination of all three. This might be a good time to look at good secondhand off-roaders, machines that can chase storms and cross swollen rivers without giving up the fight. Or perhaps we should examine bulletproof German sedans, the ones with tank-like body structures and bank vault solidity that can weather winddriven debris while massaging your backside. And with fuel at an all-time high, this might be a good time to talk the finer points of good used hybrids.

2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4: What Is A Lamborghini?

The best automotive brands have established some distinctive idea of what they are in the head of the typical enthusiast. This idea, or more likely set of ideas, gets built up, often over decades, through reading about, seeing and discussing the brand. For many enthusiasts, actually driving the cars is small part of what forms that brand image. After all, how many people have driven a McLaren or a Bugatti or, as is our case in point, a Lamborghini? Even among more common performance cars, many enthusiasts have no direct experience with a Viper or a 911 GT3 or even an M5. The result, we’ve noticed over time, is that many enthusiasts hold an idea of brands and models that don’t have much connection with the reality of what is rolling off the assembly line

First Look: 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

After a plethora of spy shots, we have finally gotten our first look at the latest creation from Lamborghini. Known as the Aventador LP700-4, the new model takes its name from a famous fighting bull that locked its horns in 1993 at the Saragossa Arena in Spain and won the prestigious Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera for the courage it showed in the pit.

List: Geneva Motor Show Preview

The Geneva Motor Show—always a paradise for insane concept cars, design studies, important new production vehicle launches, and the goofiest of the Euro boutique companies—is just around the corner. Here are just a few of the many reasons to stay tuned to news from the show.

Friday Video: Underground Racing’s Twin-Turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo

Underground Racing has made a name for itself by twin-turbocharging cars that probably have no business being twin-turbocharged. We’re glad they do it, though.

Before we even delve into the full, wonderful insanity that is the Sesto Elemento, there are just a few facts that bear mentioning immediately:

Driven: 2011 Audi R8 Spyder

It took a few runs up the rev ladder for us to notice it, but the sweet spot—where the exhaust note decants audibly in the desert air at exactly the same moment that the engine is spinning up power in a rising wave of giddy excess—is a moving target between 6000 and about 6500 rpm. Hit that spot in third gear, with the throttle opened all the way up, and the asphalt swinging away ahead of you in a gentle, hot arc, and you’ll be forgiven by any man, woman, or being that you swear fealty to for thinking that you’ve stepped into heaven’s earthly boundaries.

List: Ten Concepts We Wish Had Become Production Cars

Concept cars serve many purposes; technology demonstrators, gauges of public opinion, and indications of future design direction, to name just a few. Unfortunately, as cool as some concept cars may be, they aren’t always followed up by production versions. In fact, some of the very coolest concept cars are pure thought/design exercises.

List: Top Ten Cars We Probably Had Posters Of As Children

In elementary school, we had book fairs every few months. For us as kids, they were an excuse to get out of class, check out the newest Guinness Book of World Records, score some Mad Libs, and, of course, come home with a totally radical car poster. Even today, we still see some of these same cars sold in frames at mall kiosks, or given away as carnival prizes, and it makes us think of the cars we loved as kids, usually for no good reason.

Beijing 2010: 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Edition

While Lamborghini isn’t the first to release a China-specific supercar, they may have succeeded in making the biggest splash in some time. The (get the albuterol inhaler ready) Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce China Limited Edition (breathe) is a ten-unit run that features a host of differences from the “standard” Murciélago SV.

Driven: 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

More torture for us. We are now being forced to do nearly thirty laps all-out on a gorgeous circuit in southern Spain in Lamborghini’s latest hot performer, the 2011 Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera. You may recall the previous generation Gallardo limited-run Superleggera that we tried in early 2007 and that was a goodie, but it didn’t honestly get the full-on treatment and those shortfalls just slightly flawed the drive experience.

Lamborghini In The Snow: Our Spy Shooter Takes The Day Off With The Murciélago Roadster

Though we usually hear from him when camped out next to the Nürburgring in Germany, with various long-lenses at the ready, it seems that our trusty spy photographer Andreas had a bit of a vacation recently. The lucky photog sent us this cheerful set of photos today, telling us that he had recently spent a fun week driving this snow tire-equipped Lamborghini Murciélago in his home Sweden (at least that’s where we think he is).
