List: Top Ten Performance Bargains

In this list, we detail ten cars that really get you the most bang for your buck. Some of these aren't the most wallet-friendly of cars, but when it comes down to what class they compete in, you'd be hard pressed to find something just as good for the same price.

List: Ten Cars That Will Make Up Ground On Recalled Toyotas

Clearly, if you haven’t been living under an internet-, television, and radio wave-proof rock for the last few weeks, you know that all is not right with mighty Toyota. A perfect storm of defective parts and massive media attention have likely got more than a few American car buyers wondering where their next ride will come from. We’ve matched up a list of recalled Toyota products (excluding the floor mat issue-only cars, they’ll be fine) with a group of cars that we think can make big gains in this period of power vacuum.

List: Our Top Ten Favorite Fast Fords

Since just after Henry went racing in 1901, Ford Motor Company has had a long and rich history of building some pretty fast machines. What’s more (and better), many of these Fast Fords have been well within the reach of the common man, meaning a lot more driving fun for everyone.

List: Ten Great Rear Seats

As drivers, we very rarely get to sample the nice rear seats that automakers put into their latest and greatest cars. Whether it’s for the purpose of luxury or functionality, rear seats have come a long way from the standard benches of yore, and this list is a true testament to some cars being better suited for passengers, rather than those behind the steering wheel.

List: Our Five Favorite Detroit Show Debuts

A lot of shiny new metal debuted at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. And while we’ve spent a lot of time fawning over a lot of the concepts and production cars that were unveiled, only a few really stand out in our minds as the best cars of the show.

List: Truly Cool Minivans

Toyota is pleased with its new Sienna minivan, seeing it as a fresh alternative to the dumpy, uncool image usually associated with these oft-ridiculed people-haulers. Winding Road’s Seyth Miersma found out if it lived up to the hype, leaving us to paw through the WR family photo albums for past MPVs that transcend their unflattering stereotypes. Surely, the Sienna wasn’t the first vehicle of its kind to attempt to appeal to the more savvy soccer moms.

2010 Detroit Auto Show Preview

It’s a special time of the year here at Winding Road, when we think not only of the holiday season, but also the much-anticipated 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. These are the cars that we think will steal a lot of the attention at the show, which we’ll be covering January 11 – 12. Don’t miss out on your chance to get down to Cobo, too—NAIAS opens to the public on January 16 and runs through January 24.

List: The Ten Most Beautiful Cars Of The Decade

As 2009 comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the many cars that have stood out over the past decade. And though many cars are revered for their great levels of performance or their overall presence in the automotive marketplace, a car’s design is easily the most recognizable trait that lingers in our minds. Here, we present to you, the most beautiful cars of the last decade.

List: Ten Cars That Are All Bark And No Bite

In automotive terms, a “sleeper” is a car that doesn’t look like it’ll do much damage, but once it hits the road, it’s a real performance dream. Think of the Mazdaspeed3 or BMW 335d—two cars that don’t look all that vicious but are really stunning machines to steer. These cars, however, are just the opposite.

List: Ten Worst Cars For A Blind Date

We know how important it is to make a good first impression, and that blind dates are a peculiar set of circumstances, subject to specific rules.

Many people will say they don’t care what kind of car someone drives. It’s a lie. Particularly on blind dates, a new acquaintance will always judge you with harsh skepticism, and your mode of transportation will surely come under scrutiny.

List: The Top 10 Lightest 300 Horsepower Cars

300 horsepower is still a significant benchmark within the auto world. (As we found out last year when we created our list of 300 horsepower cars under $10K, check it out here.) That’s enough power that some serious performance is usually on tap, especially when the curb weight is kept low in concert with the output. So which cars with at least 300 ponies are the very lightest? Our list seeks to answer just that, with cars that are on sale in the U.S. today, and being limited to just the lightest example of any one particular model (sorry 911 and Corvette). Check out the top ten hardest punching lightweights, in our gallery above.

List: Ten Performance Cars That We Wish Existed

One of our favorite ongoing discussions here at the Winding Road office is how we’d like to see some tuned-up performance variants of some of our favorite production cars. This conversation normally contains talk of turbochargers, wheels, spoilers, body kits, Recaro seats, speeding tickets, and power sliding. It’s fun to dream, isn’t it?

List: Our Gamer Wishlist

Unfortunately, we can’t always be behind the wheel. We certainly can’t do all the things we’d like to do behind the wheel. If we did, we’d go to jail. Or die.

List: Top Ten Car Names that Sound Like Medicine Names

When automakers are looking for the perfect name for their new products, they seem to strive for monikers that reach customers on a gut level rather than an intellectual one. The same can be said, we’ve noticed, of the naming conventions behind modern prescription drugs, which seem to meld a version of the intended effect with melodious prefixes and suffixes. So it was only natural that we find the shared area between modern medicine and today’s wheels; presented above for your approval. Click through the gallery above for our list of car names that sound like medicine names and then tell us where we went right or wrong in Comments.

List: Top 10 Amazing Moments in Chinese Automaker Websites

As well as being rich repositories of unintentional humor, bad translation, and bizarre imagery, sometimes the websites maintained by Chinese automakers offer a freshness of perspective that just can’t be duplicated by our own domestic companies. Perhaps because they’re not jaded by decades of intense exposure to expensive advertisements and slick marketing campaigns, the Chinese companies seem freer to explore and experiment.

List: The Top 10 Reasons to Love Monza

With the 2009 Italian Grand Prix at Monza nearly upon us, we thought it an apt time to reflect on some of the items that make the historic Italian speedway one of the best. Sure, not each of our picks is entirely related to racing, but we found them all compelling, nonetheless. Click through the gallery above to read along, and then tell us where we went wrong, in comments.

List: Our Ten Favorite Women On Cars

Since the birth of the automobile, women have been posing on cars. Often, it’s in order to sell something. Spokesperson + product = advertisement. Sometimes, the car and the woman placed together highlight the aesthetic qualities of one another, making a good photograph great. Occasionally, there’s no good reason for anyone to be on top of a vehicle (sometimes accompanied by us yelling, “Hey, that’s my car!”).
