In this list, we detail ten cars that really get you the most bang for your buck. Some of these aren't the most wallet-friendly of cars, but when it comes down to what class they compete in, you'd be hard pressed to find something just as good for the same price.
Getting involved in rallycross racing doesn’t have to mean being part of a factory-backed team with piles of cash. The Sports Car Club of America offers rallycross racing at very little cost to participants. To get started here are ten cars that fit the bill for $5000 or less.
Aaron Bragman is a Senior Analyst at IHS Automotive, and a gear head worthy of our second installment of My Car History. Often following a practical mandate to buy or lease cars from his current employer, Aaron has nevertheless piloted a compelling group of enthusiast cars (Mercury Mystiques notwithstanding).
They’re built specifically for racing, and there are no speed limits. For obvious reasons, we love being able to drive on a racetrack. Even as spectators, we come to know and love these venues that play host to the greatest sights, sounds, history, and experiences a car lover can imagine. This list offers 10 truly great road courses in the United States.
With a 2011 328i sedan sitting in our parking lot, BMW’s iconic sport sedan seemed like the ideal model to cover in today’s Model Evolution. In production since 1975, it has been one of the most successful models in BMW’s history.
Summer driving season is a approaching, and in preparation for it, we asked our loyal Facebook fans to submit their favorite driving songs. What we got was an eclectic mix, to say the least, with songs ranging from Tom Petty, to White Zombie, to Meat Loaf.
Replicas of the Lotus 7 just may be the ultimate kit cars. The lightweight, open cockpit design is iconic, to say the least, and there are a fair share of manufacturers to choose from. Whether you want to build it from scratch, or buy a fully functioning racecar, there are lots of Lotus 7 kits to choose from, depending on your budget, time commitment, and thirst for power.
While not quite as expansive a group of responses as we’d hoped to have gleaned from our Facebook followers, we did get tips on a few great driving roads across the country. Asked to name the location of their favorite, local winding road, the list above proves that at least a few of you are paying attention to more than that Garmin stuck to the windshield.
A lot of carmakers like to create gimmicks that help set them apart from other brands and add a little uniqueness to their vehicles. Some of these features actually enhance the driving experience, while others are little more than clever party tricks to impress your passengers. Whether they are useful or not, we don’t really need them, but here is a list of ten that we want anyway.
It’s tax season. We know, bummer. But once you’re done crunching the numbers, many of you will be expecting a check from the IRS. A quick Google search suggests last year’s average refund for an individual was $3000. That’s enough for a car! That’s where eBay Motors comes in.
Our former Editor-In-Chief and pillar of automotive journalism, David E. Davis, Jr., died this week. His influence lives on, especially in the form of elegantly crafted words about the cars and great driving that were his passion. Here, collected from back issues of Winding Road, are some of the timeless thoughts David E. shared with his readers.
We thought we’d ask our Facebook faithful which cars they’d be the most interested in if they had a spare ten grand lying around. The resultant list may not mirror, exactly, the ten cars we’d choose ourselves, but it’s a pretty interesting grouping, nevertheless. We took reader leads and tracked down some actual cars for sale on eBay Motors, making sure to pay strict attention to our $10K ceiling (wink).
It may still be just a wee bit wintry where we live (okay, okay, it snowed five inches last weekend), but we can’t help but feel that spring weather is just around the corner. Good thing, then, that there are these handful of all-new droptops ready and waiting to be driven and reviewed. Here are five of the convertibles we most anticipate driving in the coming months—a group that should have you excited about top-down, springtime motoring, too.
The Geneva Motor Show—always a paradise for insane concept cars, design studies, important new production vehicle launches, and the goofiest of the Euro boutique companies—is just around the corner. Here are just a few of the many reasons to stay tuned to news from the show.
Since we rebooted the Winding Road Involvement Index in Issue 61 of our digital magazine (in which Editor-In-Chief Seyth Miersma gives it a good, explanatory introduction), the list has been growing each month as we rate more and more cars. In this list you see before you today, we showcase the 15 most engaging all-wheel-drive vehicles on Version 2.0.
Rumors have been swirling about a Chevrolet-branded return of our favorite former Pontiac, the G8. We already know that GM has tapped the Australian-market Commodore (nee G8) for its upcoming cop car offering, and new rumors indicate that a public version may be in the works, too, as a possible Caprice (with a Caprice SS for the power-hungry). We’re on record as being huge G8 fans, and think the possibility of this new Caprice is, in a word, bitchin’.
We here at Winding Road are very much looking forward to the Detroit Auto Show which kicks off this Monday. Check back here early and often as we update you about the cars and concepts as they debut from Cobo Hall.
Until then, have a look at our list of the ten cars we are excited to see at the show.
We’ve driven a lot of interesting vehicles over the course of the past year, and we’ve got the photo evidence to prove it. So many pictures, in fact, that’s it has been a wonderful chore to go through twelve month’s worth of photo sets, just to pick some of our favorites to share with you. What’s more, with such a wealth of great imagery gracing the pages of Winding Road each month, we knew that we wouldn’t be able to pick out a normal Top 10 list when it came to our most breathtaking pics of the year—so we doubled the number.
Here’s a party game to try out with all of your car-loving friends and family members over the upcoming holiday season. The scenario is this: someone hands you $100,000 in a suitcase and tells you to buy a car. You can only buy one vehicle with the money, and you don’t get to keep the change when you’re done.
Thanksgiving is upon us, and we imagine many of you are getting ready to carve birds. If you’re like us, you’ll likely spend Turkey Day gabbing with the relatives about all things automotive.
Japanese über-tuners Wald have been wowing us, and subsequently you, with their Black Bison body kits for years now. Last week, it was the understated (ha!) cool of the JDM Vellfire minivan that got us pretty pumped up. So, for no particularly good reason save our love of these guys, we thought we’d string together some of our favorite Black Bison Editions from the last few years.
