For Winding Road Issue 76, in the Under The Hood column, Editor-In-Chief Miersma recounted the week he spent piloting an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Using an exotic sports car as a daily driver is a lottery dream for many of us, and Seyth was fortunate enough to live it (if only for seven days and 1000 miles).
Being an automotive journalist is a pretty cool job. We drive sweet cars, do a lot of traveling, and generally get to be car guys for 40 hours a week. That being said, if you asked any of the staffers at Winding Road if there’s another job they’d rather have, odds are racecar driver would be pretty high up on the list. That’s right, we’re all big race fans, and 2011 has been a great year for new race cars. Why list our favorites? Because racecar.
We like movies. More importantly, we like movies that feature cars as integral parts of the story. So we’ve put together a list of ten of the most influential, important, and downright entertaining vehicles in cinema history. Quite simply, these cars made the movies as much as any flesh-and-blood actor. Of course, there will be disputes about just whether we should have included Mad Max’s Ford Falcon, James Bond’s Toyota 2000GT, or Herbie (wait, there probably won’t be any arguments about that last one). We’re pretty confident with our choices though. So without further ado, read on for our list of the ten greatest cars from the movies.
Driving the Vantage for the better part of the work week, I’ve found that my lists of “likes” and “dislikes” is far different that it would have been after just one day.
About a week ago my office phone rang, with caller ID telling me that someone from Aston Martin was on the other end; I love calls like that. As it turned out, Aston PR had a V8 Vantage just lying around and wanted to know if I would have any use for the sultry coupe over the course of a week. As you might guess, it took me about four milliseconds to say, “yes.”
This weekend marks one of Winding Road’s favorite summer traditions, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This legendary endurance race will see entries from Peugeot, Audi, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Chevrolet, and Porsche among others. While we wait for the green flag to drop, we decided to look back on some of the cars that have won overall in the past. This list is hardly comprehensive though, so feel free to chime in in the comments section with your favorite cars that have conquered Le Mans.
Aston Martin unveiled its newest collaboration with Zagato, this time based on the V12 Vantage. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the DB4GT Zagato, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato debuted over the weekend at the Villa D’Este Concours in Italy. Next month, it will compete in the 24 Hours Nürburgring race.
Pahrump, Nevada doesn’t sound like a very good place to drive an Aston Martin, does it? Say the place name out loud and, if you’re like us, you’re liable to hear something like the sound made by a drunken circus elephant sitting down in a muddy field. In fact, with apologies to Crapo, Maryland and Fleatown, Ohio, Pahrump is one of the least romance-inspiring place names we’ve come across.
It may still be just a wee bit wintry where we live (okay, okay, it snowed five inches last weekend), but we can’t help but feel that spring weather is just around the corner. Good thing, then, that there are these handful of all-new droptops ready and waiting to be driven and reviewed. Here are five of the convertibles we most anticipate driving in the coming months—a group that should have you excited about top-down, springtime motoring, too.

While you might be tucking-in to a nice breakfast on this fine Christmas morning, we thought you might enjoy a bit of audio/visual entertainment. This video features Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage road car and the DBR1-2 Gulf Oil LMP1 Le Mans racer assaulting a lonely piece of road.

Even though brand purists will probably be screaming bloody murder, and David Brown may be doing back flips in his grave, Aston Martin has officially approved the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet for production. The diminutive city car will receive an extensive revamp before it can wear the winged Aston Martin logo. The car will have new exterior body panels and a redesigned interior. Aston Martin is claiming the Cygnet will offer the same tailor-made feeling as one of the brand’s luxury GT cars. While details on this tailor-made feel are sketchy, expect a large crop of exterior colors, interior trims, and upholsteries to be made available to demanding customers.
The Aston Martin One-77 is pretty rare, with only 77 examples produced, so when our spy photographer caught one on the Nürburgring, he did the right thing by snapping a few pictures and sending them our way.
