Rumor: WRX Hatchback Might Return, Subaru Says

When we drove the new 2015 Subaru WRX, we were enamored with its pugnacious 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine, uprated interior, great steering and exemplary handling. We were, however, less than enthused to hear that the 5-door hatchback version of the WRX had been given the ax. Turns out we weren’t alone.

WR TV: 2015 Subaru WRX STI Flying Lap at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

Subaru is quite confident in the new WRX STI’s on-track abilities. So much so, in fact, that they invited us to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to put the new winged wonder through its paces around the course.

Preview: 2015 Subaru WRX STI

When we drove the standard WRX in November of last year, we found it to be a great road car with incredible handling capabilities, but it perhaps lacked a little something in the sex appeal department. With the new STI model, Subaru looks to increase the WRX’s performance capabilities even more, and make the WRX more of a head turner while they’re at it.

Tokyo 2013: Subaru Cross Sport Design Concept

Perhaps as a consolation prize to those mourning the loss of the wagon variant in the WRX, Subaru brought several hatch-equipped concepts to Tokyo this year, including this rather striking, shooting brake-styled Cross Sport Design Concept.

First Look: 2014 Subaru Forester

Subaru has taken the wraps off of its all-new Forester ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Forester, a favorite here at WR, borrows its looks from the well-received Impreza/XV Crosstrek, with aggressively styled headlights and a split grille. Seventeen-inch wheels come standard, while eighteens are optional.

Subaru is showing Special Edition versions of its 2013 WRX and WRX STI at SEMA in Las Vegas this week. Their debut coinciding with Halloween, the cars feature a Tangerine Orange Pearl paint (which you might be familiar with from Subaru’s new XV Crosstrek) and black custom wheels, front fender badging, mirror housings, and exterior graphics.

Quick Drive: 2012 Subaru Forester 2.5XT

The Forester 2.5XT has a couple things going for it that can be found in tandem in many other Subarus, but it is an especially nice combination, and worth mentioning straightaway: its turbocharged boxer engine, and all-wheel drive.

First Look: 2013 Toyota GT 86

This is, maybe, possibly, hopefully the car that will be known as the Scion FR-S when it appears in the United States. Of course, we probably won’t see the Scion badged version until January’s Detroit Auto Show. In the mean time though, the world debut of the Toyota GT 86 offers quite a bit of information about the car that will debut in about six weeks.

LA 2011: Subaru BRZ Concept – STI

We’re getting closer and closer to the start of the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, and with it, the official unveiling of the hotly anticipated rear-wheel-drive Subaru BRZ (and its platform mate, the Scion FR-S/Toyota FT-86). In the mean time, Subaru has released this teaser of an STI-ified version of the BRZ.

Driven: 2012 Subaru Impreza

The night before we were to drive it, Subaru gave us a presentation on the new Impreza, detailing what made this vehicle a better machine than the generation before it, as well as giving us a chance to finally meet the vehicle in person. The 2012 model ditches the 2.5-liter engine for a new 2.0-liter boxer four, providing 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This allows for a significant increase in fuel economy (27 city, 36 highway mpg for cars equipped with the continuously variable transmission), without sacrificing speed. In fact, the new Impreza is capable of hitting 60 miles per hour from a standstill in under 10 seconds—not amazing, but better than before.

Spy Shots: Porsche Boxster Driven Hard At Nürburgring

Today, we got these spy shots of the Porsche Boxster testing on the Nürburgring. They don’t really reveal anything since the last time we saw it, but we sure love to see the car getting rowdy at the track.

Spy Shots: Subaru FT-86 Spotted, Possibly STI Version

Quick Drive: 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan

This Subaru left me in a bit of an odd place. I have very little experience with the WRX (or its big brother, the STI), but a ton of experience in Mitsubishi’s Lancer Ralliart and Evo. After a few days behind the wheel, I was truly impressed with the value that the WRX represented, especially compared to the more expensive Ralliart.

Secondhand Gems: $20K All-Wheel-Drive Sport Sedans

Life in the northern latitudes—or nosebleed elevations in the west and southwest—gets a bit more interesting during the winter months. Sure, you could pilot a rear-wheel-drive performance sleigh through snowy roads, much the same as you could go skydiving with a parachute packed by The Three Stooges. You may convince yourself that nothing bad will happen or that you can handle the consequences. Some people may even derive some excitement from the challenge.

First Look: 2010 Subaru Outback Gets Legacy Treatment

Just like the Legacy sedan, the Subaru Outback receives some substantial updates for the 2010 model year. The revised Legacy’s design language is very much present on the Outback, though it looks a bit more awkward in this tall wagon guise. Speaking of tall, the 2010 Outback’s ground clearance has been increased to a total of 8.7 inches, giving it more of a crossover stance rather than an Allroad-esque wagon.
