The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Volkswagen AG is disputing GM’s announcement of being the global sales champion.
The first Barret-Jackson auction of 2012 finished up last weekend. If you want to get a glimpse of some seriously rare and meticulously maintained autos, this might just be your Mecca. We’ve sifted through the (extensive) catalog for this year’s auction, and selected ten of our favorites that crossed the block last week with the prices that they sold for.
The Tig has good size, is nice looking (the redesign was a good piece of work for VW), is easily maneuverable in the suburban sprawl, with confidence-inspiring AWD that will never need to prove itself on anything rougher than an icy street. The powertrain is, as is mentioned above, somewhere between “adequate” and “sort of fun” on the enthusiast spectrum, which puts it in the top-half of the crossover segment, at least.
Volkswagen debuted the hybrid version of its popular Jetta sedan at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Here, we offer you these live photos of the car from the show floor.
Hyundai took the wraps off the hotly anticipated Veloster Turbo at today’s North American International Auto Show. The Veloster Turbo is destined to go toe-to-toe with the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si, and Mini Cooper S.
When a concept car is called “E-Bugster,” and it proports to be a “speedster” that’s, very obviously, not a convertible, we’d forgive you for thinking that we made the whole thing up. Thankfully, we have live images of the imaginative concept car to back up the info you’ve already received.
The winners of the 2012 North American Car And Truck Of The Year Awards have been announced, with the Hyundai Elantra taking home car honors, and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque winning out amongst the truck competition.
Last week was the beginning of the Tokyo Motor Show, which saw some new concept and production cars hit the stage. Have a look below to see our coverage of the show.
BMW brought the upcoming ActiveHybrid 5 to the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show, giving us a glimpse of the future fuel-economy champion of the 5-Series range. When it hits US shores this March, the ActiveHybrid 5 will make use of the 3.0-liter turbocharged six from the 535i, along with an electric drivetrain and an eight-speed automatic.
Volkswagen has debuted its Cross Coupe concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. The compact, four-door, all-wheel-drive SUV features plug-in hybrid technology. Powered by two electric motors and a direct-injection gasoline engine, it offers up to 25 miles of pure electric range.
On my usual way in to the office, there’s a nice, wide on-ramp with a very sharp righthand corner before a very short entrance to the freeway. In most cars, to make it to highway speeds before having to merge, I have to carry a lot of speed through that corner. No problem, it’s a great way to start my day, and get a small sense of what the car can do. I start wide on the left, and try to hit the late apex while putting the power back on.
Volkswagen brought a Beetle R Concept to the LA Auto show. You know, like the Golf R, only a Beetle, and just a concept.
Volkswagen has released images and info on the refreshed CC. Already a looker, the 2013 CC wears new front and rear fascias, and also features a raft of new standard equipment.
The 2011 Los Angeles International Autos Show is just around the corner, which means it’s high time to start thinking about the winner of the 2012 Green Car of the Year award. Presented for the seventh year in a row at LA, the GCOY recognizes the most fuel efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles of the year.
We know you like cars. We can safely assume that many of you are also Star Wars fans (well, at least of Episodes IV through VI). And if you’ve read our review of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat, you might be interested in this eBay charity auction. It’s a one-of-a-kind Star Wars Passat TDI. How’s that for a mash-up of interests?
It was a relief to see the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle in person, and to see that it, in fact, lived up to its name, forsaking the cartoonish architecture of the last-gen “New” Beetle. With its flatter, longer roof, lowered stance, and upright windshield, we actually felt the instinctual urge to slug the nearest person in the arm. Some of the amassed Bugs were sporting retro wheels—and they actually looked great! Looking at the group of 2012 Beetles in the Volkswagen headquarters parking lot, we found it easy to recall some of our favorite driving experiences on the rainy, meandering coastal highway of central Oregon in our friend Luke Frels’s 1974 Beetle. Clearly, this new car was doing what it was meant to do, which is inspire an emotional response to the vehicle—a wholly welcome psychological manipulation.
Today Winding Road brings you the sights, sounds, and shocking acceleration of the 2012 Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Quattro. A quick note: the “strobe” effect you see from the A6’s LED lights is a artifact of a slight camera miscalculation on our part, and not something that’s visible in the real world. That said, we do think Audi could do well with some kind of “disco” lighting package.
It’s no secret that there is near-universal love for convertibles here in the Winding Road offices (with the notable exception of cabriolet-hater John Beltz Snyder). In fact, we have an unwritten rule here at WR HQ, that unless it is raining, the top must be down, regardless of other weather conditions. The problem is, convertibles are, for the most part, a precious commodity.
Turn up your speakers, plug in your headphones, Winding Road has made an in-depth exhaust note comparison video.
After toying around with various configurators for previous Base Versus Loaded pieces, many of which allow users to tack on enough options to nearly double the price of the base vehicle, it’s refreshing to be able to load up a car for just a few thousand dollars. Such is the case with the Volkswagen GTI.
At the launch of the new Jetta, we were able to go out and try the gasoline-powered versions. What we found was a car that seemed to fit the bill as far as the marketplace was concerned, but wasn’t quite ready for the enthusiast seal of approval. Still, we managed to have some fun in it, despite some concerns about acceleration.
