List: Ten Cars We Are Looking Forward To In Los Angeles

With the LA Auto Show rapidly approaching, a few manufacturers have dropped us some tantalizing crumbs in the past couple weeks about what we can expect. From hybrids and well kept secrets to a few caged beasts, here is a glimpse into what we are looking forward to when the show kicks off on November 17.

Driven: 2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe And G25 Sedan

Expand or die. Auto manufacturers confront this either/or business reality like few other economic sectors. Most choose the former or expire trying. Ditches along roadside are filled with marques that didn’t grow: AMC, Jensen, DeTomaso, insert your favorite lovable failure here. Jaguar’s X-Type and Volkswagen’s Pheaton illustrate the perils of brands attempting to expand their share by moving down or up from their starting point.

Quick Drive: 2010 Infiniti EX35

You have to applaud Infiniti for trying to put some dynamic character in almost every vehicle it makes, even when that might not be what is expected. In the case of the EX35, we have a mid-sized SUV that feels a lot like you might expect a SUV would feel if it had a lot of G37 DNA.

Driven: 2011 Infiniti QX56

Generally speaking, when we attend a media drive event for a new vehicle we can expect to have a solid fifteen minutes to a half-hour section of the initial presentation devoted to vehicle design. This is where executive level design guys can really go to town, telling the assembled media about subtle heritage cues, the hiding of mass or height, and exotic themes or shapes integrated into the vehicle’s aesthetic. If the new car in question is particularly provocative or progressive of design, the explanations can go on for still longer.

First Look: 2011 Infiniti M

When we think of competitors for the BMW 5-Series, things like the Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar XF, and Audi A6 come to mind immediately, and sadly, the Infiniti M is casually overlooked in most cases. This was mostly due, in part, to an anemic V-8 mill, out-of-date interior materials and technology, and old styling. This all changes, though, as Infiniti has just debuted the sexy new M — in both M37 and M56 flavors — at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Driven: 2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

Creating a really good convertible is tricky business, especially when the coupe or sedan it’s based on is such a strong, well-liked car. Simply lobbing the roof off causes a whole host of rigidity and stiffness problems—not to mention design dilemmas—and if these issues aren’t properly addressed, the new-found droptop might just be a big mess. The Infiniti G37, for example, is one of our favorite sport coupes, but in its cabriolet guise, the chassis proves to be a bit more flexible than we’d like. Don’t even get us started on worse offenders like the Chrysler Sebring and Toyota Solara.

Driven: 2011 Hyundai Equus Stops By For A Visit

When Hyundai launched the Genesis sedan a last year, we were very impressed. They managed to create a car unlike anything else they’ve ever done that was not only good to drive and extremely well-equipped, but priced substantially less than the competition. To continue on in this saga, Hyundai recently announced that they will be selling their larger flagship sedan, the Equus, in North America. This car is positioned to do to the Lexus LS what the Genesis has done to the Lexus GS and Infiniti M. (Note: Equus is what the car is called in other markets, and the official U.S. name hasn’t been decided upon at this time.)
