Rumors: Industry Report—Big Plans For Cadillac

News I By Doran Dal Pra I February 28, 2012

The past several years have been good to Cadillac—exciting new cars, a marked increase in quality, and a drastically improved public image. And, a recent report from Businessweek indicates that Cadillac and General Motors have no intention of kicking back to revel in their successes.

With sights set firmly on doubling sales and passing Lexus as the number four luxury brand, Cadillac is planning the release of several new vehicles including a sedan that slots in above the new XTS, a smaller SUV to compete with the likes of the BMW X3, a new Escalade built on the same platform as the Buick Enclave, and the upcoming ATS sedan that will bring the fight to segment leaders like the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Cadillac is also reportedly working on a plug-in hybrid called the ELR which will make use of technology found in the Chevrolet Volt.
It’s estimated that Cadillac was ranked in roughly seventh place for total luxury car sales last year, selling nearly 200,000 vehicles. Lexus moved more than double that number, selling 408,000 cars in the same year. GM is hoping that with a continued eye on quality, new products, and the continued expansion of the Cadillac brand in foreign markets, it can knock Lexus out of its top five spot.
