Driven: 2015 Cadillac CTS Vsport

With competition from the likes of the BMW 5-Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Audi A6, it’s clear that Cadillac faced an uphill battle when they brought the CTS into the midsized sport sedan fray back in 2002. Since then we’ve seen the CTS-V best the Germans on their own turf with a record-setting Nurburgring lap time and a steady series of tweaks and refinements as the car matured but, performance notwithstanding, there’s always been a sense that while the CTS made for a great midsized sports sedan, it still existed a step or two below its European rivals as an overall package. Last year marked the debut of the all-new third generation CTS, which brought with it a striking new design, a longer wheelbase, a lower roofline, and debut of the Vsport trim level which slots between the base model and the as-yet unannounced CTS-V. Even a brief glance at the new car made it clear that Cadillac was in it to win it with the new CTS, but with the firm foothold of the established players in the segment, would it be enough? We spent a week with the CTS Vsport to find out.

Update: Cadillac CTS Gets Freshened Up for 2015

It might not seem like so long ago that Cadillac introduced an all-new CTS to the motoring public, and in fact, it was only last year that we first saw Cadillac’s new mid sized sedan. Regardless, the company saw fit to tweak a few things for 2015, and we have the details on what’s in store.

Driven: 2014 Cadillac XTS Vsport

One of my earliest automotive memories is of my father’s 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. As a wee lad, I remember a car that was seemingly endless in size, power and presence. Awash in leather and chrome, this was clearly a vehicle whose main mission in life was to announce to the world that the owner had arrived – both literally and figuratively. As the current flagship model of the Cadillac brand, in many ways the XTS is the spiritual successor to that Fleetwood. But where the Fleetwood had a more or less singular design goal from the onset, the XTS Vsport is asked to do a number of things well – some of which are intrinsically opposed to one another.

2014 Cadillac XTS To Get 410-Horsepower V-6

The Cadillac XTS isn’t known as the most exciting vehicle in the brand’s lineup. In fact, it’s a rather dull, but luxurious, offering. Actively avoiding the production of dull cars seems to have become a bit of an obsession at Cadillac, though, so it’s gone ahead and dropped the 410-horsepower, biturbocharged V-6 from the all-new CTS under the graceful hood of the XTS. The result is a large Caddy that we’d be happy to drive.

New York 2013: Third-Gen Cadillac CTS Leaked

“Wow.” That’s been our reaction to the debut of two generations of Cadillac’s bread-and-butter sedan. It certainly seems like an appropriate response to the recently leaked third-generation model.

First Look: 2014 Audi RS6

Cadillac recently announced that the next-generation CTS wouldn’t be offered in a wagon. This makes us sad, as it essentially means the death of the superb CTS-V Wagon. Have no fear, though, as Audi’s come to the rescue with this. It is the RS6 Avant and it will be very fast.

Quick Drive: 2013 Cadillac XTS Platinum AWD

Cadillac has been producing some really fantastic sedans as of late. We’ve been fans of the CTS (particularly the monstrous V-badged version) for some time now. Recently, we fell head-over-heels in love with the brand’s new compact sedan, the ATS. Now, Cadillac has seen fit to toss us the key fob to its large XTS, and let us draw our own conclusions. We can tell you, without giving too much away in the first paragraph, that this car really honors the marque’s new tradition of thoroughly enjoyable, thoroughly American luxury sedans.

Driven: 2013 Cadillac ATS

We gazed upon the Cadillac ATS in person, with the words “It’s gorgeous” on the tip of our tongue. It looks quite a lot like the macho CTS sedan, only smaller, and with an overall image that feels simply more elegant.

First Look: 2013 Cadillac ATS

Cadillac has officially taken the wraps off its new BMW 3-Series fighter, the ATS. There will be three engine options, with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder powering the base model. Uprated models will feature either a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower or the 320-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 from the bigger CTS. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. All-wheel drive will also be available.

Comparison Test: 2012 BMW X5M vs. 2012 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

There are a lot of things that make these cars match up well, in spite of the price. The BMW X5M and Cadillac CTS-V Wagon are very powerful. They both represent their respective brands’ ultimate fusion of performance and utility. Each is impressive in its ability to get our heart pounding and put a smile on our face. But one of these haulers is clearly the more engaging, more thrilling driver’s vehicle.

Cadillac’s 2013 XTS marks the latest evolution of the Arts and Science design language. The XTS pulls it off well, smoothing out the right areas, while maintaining the trademark creases along the hood and doors.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS

I’ll admit, based on my experiences behind the wheel of the Cadillac CTS-V, I expected a little bit better from the V-6-powered CTS. It wasn’t that I was disappointed by its abilities as a luxury sedan, or by the level of equipment, but that from a handling perspective the CTS-V was so much better than our tester.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

After driving the CTS-V coupe, the Cadillac CTS wagon feels like a completely different car. It feels a lot less like a coffin, to start, and the atmosphere inside the cabin is brighter and much more relaxed. This is partly due to the extra space and breathing room, but also simply because it lacks some of the more hardcore elements of the V. It still has the nice interior, lots of nice touch points, and the comfortable ride which filters out a lot of the feeling of the road.

Driven: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

The Cadillac CTS line has been exceeding both customer and critical expectation since it first arrived on the scene for the 2003 model year. Reenergizing the rear wheel-drive DNA for the Cadillac brand, we’ve always found the CTS to be completely competent, if not always as decidedly inspired as its (mostly European) competition.

Driven: 2010 Cadillac CTS-V

The cabin of the 2010 Cadillac CTS-V spoke to the nature of the car. The gear selector and steering wheel were clad in suede, begging to be held. The instrument panel shone brightly, with the small boost gauge in particular catching our eye with a promise of some supercharged fun. Prominent contrasting stitching on the dash looked classy and bold. The Recaro seats, though totally adjustable, held us firmly in a position of attention, the bolsters prodding us into alertness. The V-badged Caddy reminded us a bit of the Concorde jet—sleek, luxurious, supremely fast, yet odd to behold. There is no question, even before firing up the CTS-V, that this is a driver’s car.
