Next month, Mazda hopes to break its own Guinness World Record for “largest parade of Mazda cars” with a gathering of MX-5s in Lelystad, Holland. The event, called IMAX-5 2013, hopes to bring together close to 800 examples of the popular roadster at RDW Test Centrum for a drive through the Dutch countryside.
Ask the Winding Road staff what their favorite places in the world are, and it’s only a matter of time before someone mentions The Tail Of The Dragon. Officially called US Route 129 or Deals Gap, the Dragon is a viciously winding ribbon of tarmac, made up of 318 curves spread across 11 miles. That’s about 29 curves for every mile of road. Making things more difficult are the precipitous drop-offs and trees that sandwich the road. This is not a route for the faint of heart.
TeamSpeed and Autoevolution have each posted renderings of the 2015 Alfa Romeo Spider. While the renderings appear to only differ in color in backdrop, they look remarkably sharp, and could be a pretty close guess as to what the car will look like when it begins production.
If you wanted a small, affordable, and fun-to-drive convertible, your had to choose between the Mazda MX-5 and one of the variants of the Mini Roadster (if you’re wondering which one to choose, click here). That’s hopefully set to change, if Toyota’s latest concept is any indication.
We were offered a turn in a rare Evo GSR, complete with the old-school five-speed manual transmission. It had all the important bits, like the revvy, turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, but the addition of a third pedal changes the Evo’s equation considerably. Join us as we take it for a spin in our latest POV test drive.
Every morning at 9:00, Winding Road editors Brandon Turkus and John Beltz Snyder have a little chat online about the weather (snowy), how we’re feeling (could use a coffee), and about the cars we’re driving. These conversations can sometimes be pretty revealing about our weekly loans. One such conversation happened this morning, when Brandon asked John about his time with the Mazdaspeed3. The Mazda was immediately compared to the Ford Focus ST, and the issue of torque steer was the particular focus.
This month, test out the new Land Rover Range Rover, and it just may be the best of its kind. Plus, we pack a bunch of other automotive content in this issue.
The 2014 Mazda6 is exactly what we expect from a Mazda sedan: it’s fun without sacrificing comfort. It’s affordable, but still feels techy and advanced. It’s stylish without being in-your-face. We aren’t sure how it’ll fare in a world dominated by Camrys, Accords, and Fusions, but if Mazda can get customers behind the wheel, we think it’ll be a pretty easy sell.
Throughout those adventures, the tossability and fun-to-drive nature of the CX-5 remained a talking point. A bigger talking point, though, was the absolute lack of power. Mazda built an entertaining crossover, but it was too underpowered to live up to its suspension’s potential. Thankfully, that’s been solved for the 2014 model year. Joining the 155-horsepower, 150-pound-foot, 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-pot is the brawnier 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder from the Mazda6 (review coming very soon).
Toyota’s game of one-upmanship goes something like this: take a GT86, the nimble, light, and fun-to-drive coupe, whose American cousin was one of our top cars, and remove the roof. Then place on a plinth and gauge critical and public reaction.
Mazda has its diesel-powered Grand-Am racecar, raced by SpeedSource engineering, on the show floor at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We found it particularly cool-looking, so we snapped some shots of it.
Sometimes, covering the conventional requires the unconventional. Cars don’t get much more conventional than the Toyota RAV4. This is bread-and-butter, basic, crossover transportation. If that’s all you really need, then we strongly suggest you go out and look at the RAV. However, if the RAV is a bit too jack-of-all, master-of-none, we’re going to outline three alternative takes on the RAV4’s crossover formula.
Sitting outside the Advanced Autosports semi between races at a Midwestern Council event at Road America back in August, Jim Kettelkamp casually mentioned a potential trip to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) for the 13 Hour SCCA Charge Of The Headlight Brigade endurance race in October. Already having enlisted Steve Krock, a suspension mechanic on the Ed Carpenter IndyCar team, Doctor Jim was looking for a third driver for the team. I switched off all rational decision making processes for a few seconds and signed up.
That whole “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” sentiment rings pretty true, especially when it comes to cars. The Nagare design language (you probably know it as the smiley face front grille on all Mazdas) on the outgoing generation of the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup that garnered rather lukewarm acceptance, is being phased out in favor the more muscular Kodo design theme. Kodo has already been shown on the CX-5 and all-new Mazda6, and now the full-size CX-9 will be benefiting from the restyling.
The handsome Mazda6 will be getting a long-roof wagon when it goes on sale later in 2013. We like the design plenty. The new rear end looks natural and fits the overall design theme.
Mazda has unveiled the 2014 Mazda6 ahead of its debut at the 2013 Moscow Auto Show. The new mid-size sedan’s design is heavily influenced by the Takeri Concept that we saw at the 2012 New York Auto Show. This is a good thing.
This is the Master Landing Page for the Mazda6. From now on, as we further review this car, we will be updating this page with whatever fresh content we create. Future drive reviews, updated specifications, videos, and other relevant information will all be found right here, in one convenient spot.
Not every collector of 1970’s automobiles is into muscle cars and British convertibles, it seems. And while the market for something like this very modified RX-2 may be smaller than that for a Camaro or a GTO, we really believe that the market for these early Japanese cars for the US market is just getting warmed up.
Mazda has given us a hint at what it’s new-for-2014 Mazda6 sedan will look like. Not surprisingly, it shares the handsome good looks of the Takeri Concept that debuted at the 2012 New York International Auto Show.
This month in Winding Road, the Mini Roadster takes aim at the long-reigning king of the segment, the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Plus, we pack a bunch of other automotive content in this issue.
