Yesterday, we reported that Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, was a possible venue for a US Grand Prix. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy disagrees.
It’s Friday, which means it’s almost time to break out the video game paddles and take on the Nürburgring from the comfort of our couch. To help us with our line, Ferrari has generously posted this video of the 599XX breaking the seven-minute barrier for a production-derived car. The time: 6 minutes, 58.16 seconds.
Continuing the global automotive trend of offering everything under the sun with a hybrid system, Ford has taken the wraps off of the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
Saab’s new Dutch owner Victor Muller is an adamant, outspoken kind of car guy. Exemplifying this sometimes impulsiveness, while we were talking with him near the airport he handed us the key fob to his pre-production 2011 Saab 9-5, and said we could have a spin in it so long as he was our constant passenger.
Because he can’t drive F10 every day, Bahrain GP winner Fernando Alonso has selected a fine Maserati GranCabrio for himself, in the color of Grigio Granito.
Quick, name something the Toyota Prius has in common with Ferrari. Tough one? The answer (as of now) is hybrid drivetrains. Ferrari took the wraps off its new hybrid 599 HY-KERS at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, and it’s as green as Ferrari can make it. Featuring a bit of traditional hybrid tech and a healthy dose of Formula1 witchcraft, Ferrari has manufactured a car that loses none of the dynamic performance of its gas-only brethren.
When Scion was launched in 2003, its mission was to bring younger buyers who were looking for an edgy alternative to the economy and compact cars that were currently on the market. Although the success of this mission is debatable, there is one thing that is not, and that is the success of original xB. Upon its launch, the xB was lauded for its style and affordable entry price. For model year 2008, the second generation of the psychedelic little box was released. Unfortunately, the new model grew fatter in every dimension and lost the sharp boxiness of the original.
Like the V-6 and V-8 Mustangs, the top-dog Shelby GT500 is also receiving some pretty substantial changes for the 2011 model year. A bit more power, better fuel economy, and new performance upgrades are on hand, meaning that the GT500 will be even more potent than the outgoing model — changes that we can definitely get behind.
This gen-six Fiver has a lot to accomplish. We’re hot from the driver’s seat to report in first.
Lotus has released another limited edition run of the Exige, this one to commemorate the Lotus Type 72 Formula 1 car, which won 20 Grand Prix victories in the first half of the 1970s. The Lotus Exige S Type 72 will be limited to 20 cars in the United Kingdom, 20 units in mainland Europe, and another limited run in Japan.
A Lamborghini Reventon is for sale on eBay. It is number three of 20 units made. It has 78 miles on the odometer. Buy it now for only $1,495,000.
The first example of Ferrari’s Special Projects program was the illustrious P4/5 Pininfarina designed and engineered exclusively for Jim Glickenhaus, which we had the chance to review way back in Issue 14 of Winding Road. The second car from Ferrari’s one-off engineering team is finally ready for the streets — the P540 Superfast Aperta, created exclusively for customer John Walson.
Oh, the Porsche Boxster. As we recently reaffirmed in our latest comparison test, the little two-seat roadster from Porsche is one of our favorite topless road cars, and now there’s more to love. The much-anticipated Boxster Spyder won’t make its official debut until December 2nd at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the details and images have already leaked out ahead of time.

After many, many rounds of spy shots, the final details and production images have been released of the much-anticipated Lexus LFA supercar, which will have a limited production run of 500 units and will be sold for — get ready — $375,000. (Start saving your pennies.)
The Nissan GT-R isn’t an old car, and we don’t have many complaints about Godzilla’s mannerisms, but nonetheless, some small, yet crucial, tweaks have been made to the GT-R for the 2010 model year.
When General Motors announced the imminent demise of Pontiac, rumors sprung up about the much-loved G8 sedan being rebadged as a Chevy and potentially used for different North American police forces. Now, GM has officially taken the wraps off of its 2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Interceptor, but take special note — it’s not actually a G8 (read: Holden Commodore) — instead, this car is a left-hand-drive iteration of the long-wheelbase Holden Caprice/Statesman.
Though the market for mid-size sport-utility vehicles is shrinking in favor of more crossovers and funky wagon-ish things, Toyota’s 4Runner sallies forth into 2010 with a host of visual changes, along with an all-new four-cylinder engine. The new car is both wider and longer than the last-generation 4Runner, meaning that a third-row seat is now available. (Fold-down jump seats were available on previous-gen 4Runners, but we wouldn’t dare refer to that as an actual third row.)
For a while, the future of Saab looked glum. Thankfully, the fine folks at Koenigsegg have scooped up the Scandinavian automaker and now the future doesn’t look so bad. The current 9-5 was a mess of General Motors influence on an aging platform and the end result was really quite bad, but from the details and images that we have on the new 9-5, it looks like Saab might be back in the game again.
What’s not to love about the Audi R8? Well, besides the R-tronic transmission. This is one of the sexiest supercars that we’ve been able to get our hands on, and Audi has now upped the ante on its R8 hotness by removing the roof. The R8 Spyder will be hitting our shores next year in 5.2 V-10 guise, and we’re already planning our summer drive routes for this exotic droptop.
