I love watching a driver who’s driving with confidence. The difference between one with confidence, and one without, is obvious – you see it in the passing maneuvers, the way a corner is attacked, and even by the way the driver holds his head in the cockpit. In the past few years, we’ve seen demonstrations of confidence in F1 by Schumacher, then Vettel, and now Hamilton. In NASCAR, Kyle Busch shows it (and sometimes too much). In Indy cars, this year, Graham Rahal is the one who has been dragging his car around the track with his confidence. So I reached out to someone who knows Rahal well. Mike Zimicki is well-qualified to comment on what’s made Rahal faster and win more races this year than in the past. Why? Well, because Mike coached Graham for a number of years, and helped make him what he is today.
For many, half the battle of making the jump from racing fan to racing participant involves cobbling together the requisite gear. With these bundles we’ve taken the guesswork out of that task, offering bespoke packages based on experience level and the type of track driving you’ll be doing. Of course, it never hurts to have some guidance along the way, so we’re also highlighting some of our favorite books on race driving technique too.
The first race of the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship series is still a ways off, but news about the new all-electric racing series keeps coming through the pipeline. Now, Germany’s ABT Sportsline is the seventh team to sign up for the high-voltage competition.
If Sebastian Vettel cares whether he’s considered one of the all-time greats of Formula One, he needs to drive, and win, for another team. One of the things that established Michael Schumacher as a great, and perhaps the greatest, is that he won for two different teams. Even more importantly, Schumacher made these teams winners. Before he joined Benetton and then Ferrari, neither team was World Championship-winning caliber.
We mentioned a few weeks back that Mercedes was loaning seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher an F1 car to lap the notorious Nürburgring Nordschleife. Now we have video of that incredible event, with Schumi heading out on track behind an A45 AMG, a CLA45 AMG, an SLS AMG Black Series, and an SLS AMG GT3 racer.
Running in the wet at Monza, YouTube user NM2255 captured Loeb’s testing of the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Loeb will be running a car like this at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June, along with his other endurance racing commitments. Accompanying the bellow of the 460-horsepower, 3.8-liter, flat-six engine is plenty of wheel spin and a bit of sliding from the WRC ace. And much like our POV driving videos, there’s no music or commentary to take away from the sweet-sounding race car.
This car was driven by Ralf Schumacher—Michael’s younger brother—for Williams in the 1999 Formula 1 Season. Now it is available for the current equivalent of just under $345,000.
The Mercedes-Benz factory team has unveiled its latest creation, destined to battle in the 2013 Formula 1 series. Mercedes is claiming this car, like the other vehicles we’ve seen so far, is an evolution of last year’s competitor.
As the Winding Road Showroom continues to grow, we come across lots of cool products that we geek out over, whether it’s a must-have automotive accessory, flashy watch, high-tech gadget, interesting book, or gorgeous car art. Here in the Hot List, we have gathered a few that we really like, and we think you’ll enjoy them, too.
When we tested the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, we mentioned we were at the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, in Pahrump, Nevada, roughly an hour west of the Las Vegas Strip. With multiple track configurations, including kart-specific setups, Spring Mountain is a gearhead’s paradise. Track distances range from 3.4 miles for the full course layout, to a half-mile for the smallest karting layout.
We’ve been spending more and more time thinking and writing about novice racing and skill development, both here and on our Winding Road Racing Facebook channel. In doing so we’ve gotten a fair number of questions about karting, which we’ve always held as a great entry-level approach to racing. So, we thought we’d summarize some of our recent posts on the topic. As with any complex subject, a short piece just scratches the surface, but we hope you find it useful. Look for more of this type of racing content, both here and on Facebook.
We’ve already seen Maserati’s Kubang SUV concept in Frankfurt, but today it showed up on American soil for the first time. We were on hand to take pictures of the Kubang live in Detroit.
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. To date, we’ve been in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.
The last time we had an S4 in the office, it was for the purposes of doing a comparison test with the Mitsubishi Evo MR Touring. That turned out to be a surprisingly well-matched set of cars, and a hell of a good week of driving, to boot. This newer S4 experience didn’t do anything to disappoint me then, or to change my mind about loving Audi’s performance middle child.
Not everyone is flailing about in an economic freefall. That’s not to say it’s time to throw caution to the wind, but for those who still have a few bucks in the bank, you should know that six-figure supercars weren’t exactly immune to the financial crisis.
Video game developer Codemasters has released a video giving an insight into the development of F1 2010. The newest F1 game is due out September for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
Yesterday, Mercedes GP Petronas (formerly Brawn GP) launched its 2010 Formula 1 team. The Silver Arrows also showed off their livery on the car that will be driven by the returning Michael Schumacher.
