The Hot List: Volume 5

Features, Lifestyle I By Winding Road Staff I September 02, 2011
Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of “stuff” in the dozen or so hours we spend online—you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there’s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn’t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. To date, we’ve been in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

We’ll aim to bring you a list of the most interesting bits of information we run across. Ten worth-knowing-about things that may or may not be related directly to the world of cars, but all of which we think our typical enthusiast readers will be able to really dig into. We won’t know, from week to week, what will show up on this list, which is part of the fun for us and for you.

Read, enjoy, and comment. If you happen to know of something that you think would make for a good inclusion on next week’s list, drop us a line at [email protected].

Filmmaker Rob Spence lost his eye in a shotgun accident as a youngster. Several years ago, he upgraded from an eyepatch to a prosthetic eye. Next, he got the idea to turn his prosthetic eye into a working camera that could record images and transmit them wirelessly to a storage device. Spence recently announced that his camera eye is up and running. Gizmag has more.

The irreverent and slightly insane magazine, Vice, is teaming up with Mini to go places and do things most people don’t think (or sometimes even dare) to do. They have five missions planned, in Japan, Peru, South Africa, Sweden, and one undisclosed location. The best part: you can apply to join them. Whether you want in on the adventure, or just want to take it in from the comfort of your home, we promise, it’ll be interesting.

We could go on about the miracles and downfalls of fried foods, and the palatability of some of the more creative deep-fried delights. Instead, we’ll just leave you with this little culinary nugget of dubious repute: fried bubblegum.

For our designer and artist friends out there, the Inkling digital pen by Wakom could be a big help. As you sketch, it wirelessly records every stroke of the pen and stores it digitally for later editing. It even detects the amount of pressure you’re using, to capture your drawing accurately. It goes on sale later this month for $199.

Some of us used to collect comic books. It was great until we had to pack them up and move—those things are heavy, and they pile up quickly! Thankfully DC Comics is expanding its reach by adding digital editions. Now we can download Justice League whenever it comes out, read it on our computer or mobile device, and the only space it takes up is on our hard drive. Gearfuse even reports that a price drop is coming soon for the electronic comics.

Wikitude Drive is an app for Android devices that allows the driver to see the road while they navigate. The app uses the device’s camera to display the road ahead, overlaid with the various navigation information. Think of it as sort of an augmented reality app that helps you get where you’re going more safely.

Have you ever heard of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which straddles the border between the US and Canada? Have you ever been to Mexicali, Mexico or Calexico, California? If you’re curious, and don’t have the means to visit on your own, just check out Google Sightseeing’s post about strange and interesting North American Border towns.

In Celebration of Michael Schumacher’s 20 years in Formula 1 racing, Schuberth has given the seven-time world champion a gold plated helmet. Fans can even buy 1 of 20 replica helmets, designed and hand-painted by Jens Munser, and autographed by Schumi himself. Proceeds will go to FIA’s Action For Road Safety program.

Are you the user of a smartphone, taplet PC, or e-reader device? Do you ever wonder who is? Studies are showing that these demographics are changing, and women and seniors are playing a big role in that. Some interesting numbers here for statistic freaks and gadget geeks.

Do you have $65,321,527 burning a hole in your pocket? Well, if you don’t already, you have the opportunity to live like a king in this Medieval Castle, once owned by Roman Emperor Otto I. It was recently restored in 1992, so it hasn’t been left to ruin over the centuries. If you buy it, make sure to invite us to stay in one of the castle’s 30 bedrooms.
