We’ve asked our readership for the questions they would most like to have had the answers to when they were starting out in motorsports. We’ve created our Need To Know series to address many of these questions.

Hey Look! There’s Nothing!

As human beings, we hate to look at nothing. We love to look at something. Anything. Even some things we don’t want to look at, right? Have you ever been faced with something disgusting or ugly, but you looked at it anyway?

Different Cars, Different Techniques!

The higher a car’s polar moment of inertia, the earlier and more gently you need to turn in. There’s a phrase that should get you thinking!

Vision, State of Mind & Performance

In preparation for some driver development work with a high-end simulator, I was talking with a friend (an ex-F1 driver I’ll call “David”), who had done a lot of sim work in England. He told me a fascinating story; it backs up the research in an area of driver performance I often use with the drivers I coach.

What’s Really Driving Your Car?

What percentage of your driving is mental and what percentage is physical? Whether you’re racing wheel-to-wheel, doing track days or driver education events, autocrossing, or whatever, how much of it is mental and how much physical?

WRR Academy: Everyone Needs More Coaching

In a recent podcast with Ross Bentley, I was asked what one piece of advice I would give drivers. Of course, there is no single answer, because drivers are different.

How To Win The Race Start

Before a race, think about where you’re starting on the grid. Who is starting around you and what are they like to race with? Can you trust them to run wheel-to-wheel with you? Are they fast starters? Do they run a few fast laps, then begin to fade?

Circuit Of The Americas Walkthrough From Chris Taylor Racing Services

Everybody that hasn’t been on track at Circuit Of The Americas yet is foaming at the mouth, and everybody that has is in a daze from how amazing, fast, and technical this brand new, $400 million dollar facility is. I’ve been around it a couple of times over the last few months, and though I’ve probably got 20 laps on it I still don’t have a firm grasp on things…but I do think I know a good start to running a quick lap, and here it is.

Comparison Test: 2012 BMW X3 xDrive35i vs. 2012 Infiniti EX35 vs. 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs. 2012 Volvo XC60 R-Design

We wanted to put Evoque to the test. Lining up the big-selling BMW X3, the ultra-powerful Volvo XC60 R-Design, and the original-gangster-small-crossover Infiniti EX35, we figured to have great representation within this class.

Secondhand Gems: Ferrari Dreams

There are cheaper, quicker, more reliable alternatives to owning a Ferrari. There are other machines that look positively stunning from all angles while still delivering pure motoring brilliance. There are other vehicles that motivate drivers with endless powerbands and delicious aural soundtracks, born from the act of converting gasoline into horsepower. There are cars that deliver all the above without the need for frequent service schedules that can top $10,000 per visit; in fact some of them can even reach 100,000 miles with just some oil changes and a few sets of tires. There are many sensible, logical reasons why an auto enthusiast shouldn’t purchase a Ferrari. But for many, that’s exactly the reason why they do.

Quick Drive: 2012 Audi TT 2.0T

This base-level Audi TT is a pretty desirable sports coupe, but it does require a buyer that’s slightly more interested in luxury, styling, and/or overall image than performance. Don’t misunderstand me; I’ve quite enjoyed every TT driving experience that I’ve had, including this 2.0T. And, within the narrow TT universe, the base car is actually a smoking bargain (the higher spec cars get expensive quickly). But in terms of the always difficult to assess “thrills per dollar” metric, there are certainly better options.

Driven: 2012 Fisker Karma

Soon after this hotly anticipated first drive of the 2012 Fisker Karma at the infield handling circuit of California Speedway, we met up with Fisker Automotive principals Henrik Fisker and Bernhard Koehler on the floor at the recent Geneva Motor Show. They had various overseas publications opened to articles of their car strewn across a couple of back office coffee tables at their stand.

Driven: 2012 Mazda5

The hard-to-define Mazda5 sits lonely in its segment since the discontinuation of the Kia Rondo. That’s not to say that Mazda prefers to be the sole competitor—quite the opposite, in fact. Mazda welcomes the Ford C-Max to the arena, as the company claims to believe this will shed more light on the mini-minivan, or whatever you choose to call it. The company is confident the 5 will stand up to scrutiny, which is why they invited Winding Road to take it for a whirl.

Flip This Car: 1989 Ford Taurus SHO – Part Two

Buying a cheap used car for daily duty—especially a sub-$1000 performance ride—is almost always a roll of the dice, but that’s exactly what I did in part 1 of this series. For some reason, the masochistic side of my personality loves the risk. Chalk it up to adrenaline or the thrill of the challenge, but it’s definitely part of what makes cheap car challenges so much fun. There are always surprises to be had. And, as with any new relationship, it takes time to uncover all those little mysteries and secrets. The Old ’89 is no exception, though I’m pleased to offer a positive report after nearly a month behind the wheel.
