Rumor: WRX Hatchback Might Return, Subaru Says

Cars, News I By Winding Road Staff I April 07, 2014
When we drove the new 2015 Subaru WRX, we were enamored with its pugnacious 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine, uprated interior, great steering and exemplary handling. We were, however, less than enthused to hear that the 5-door hatchback version of the WRX had been given the ax. Turns out we weren’t alone.

"We have received strong interest from the US, where the hatchback was 50 percent (of previous-generation WRX sales), so we’re now considering," said Masuo Takatsu, Subaru’s general manager for the WRX when speaking with Motoring.com. Subaru told us at the WRX launch event that limited engineering resources had forced them to decide between designing the new WRX in either the sedan and the hatchback configuration – but not both – leading us to believe that the 5-door would probably follow a year or two later if the demand was there.

Since the 2015 WRX is derived from the Impreza, which is already offered as a hatchback, it’s not a huge leap of faith to expect Subaru to follow through with these plans. We certainly hope that they choose to do so – a huge part of the ‘Rex’s charm has been tied to the added versatility of that 5-door layout.
