To hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest continuous drift, one would have to know how to manage mistakes. Imagine keeping a BMW M5 going sideways for 51.28 miles! That’s what this week’s guest contributor, Johan Schwartz, did to set the record. But Johan knows about more than just drifting. In fact, he’s a multi-race winner, racing for Chevrolet in a Chevrolet Sonic in the Pirelli World Challenge, an instructor at the BMW Performance Center, and a driver coach. Enjoy and learn from Johan.
We had a great time running Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car in 2017. We ran two BMW M235iRs in TC class and one Mazda MX-5 Cup car in TCA. All of our drivers were new to PWC, and they recorded 19 top 10 finishes, plus a race win and multiple podiums.
As we are now into the second half of the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge season, a lot has changed in the GT ranks, especially for our Hawk Performance/CRP Racing team. Those that have been following along will remember that we changed to an Audi R8 after the season had already begun, so we had to learn quickly to get up to speed. After our successes at Road America, we are well and truly in the championship hunt and our primary goal is narrowing the gap to the points leader, O’Connell.
We’re used to seeing some high speed action at Detroit’s Belle Isle circuit when a series like the Pirelli World Challenger comes to town, but when the Stadium Super Trucks hit the street circuits, they bring a whole new bag of tricks with them, and it includes lots of wheel-up cornering and gratuitous airtime.
When we reported that the Challenger SRT Hellcat was officially the most powerful production muscle car ever made, we all knew the performance numbers were likely to be impressive. Still, given the Challenger’s mass, there were some reservations about just much sporting prowess 707 horsepower could provide to a car that is expected to weigh in north of 4200 pounds. Well, Dodge continues to exceed our expectations – the Hellcat is a 10 second car. But there’s a catch.

The Lamborghini Aventador is the stuff that wall posters are made of: a low, wide, angular supercar packing a 700 horsepower V12 and some of the latest technology available in today’s road cars. But for some, like the German-based supercar customizers at Mansory, that’s simply not enough. Unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the Carbonado GT is Mansory’s take on Lamborghini’s range topper, and it brings the Aventador to an entirely new level of extremity.

Earlier this month, we reported that Kia was bringing something especially interesting to this year’s Detroit Auto Show. With the recent announcement of the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang, we wanted to give the current generation Mustang a proper send off before putting that pony out to pasture.
Autoblog editor and Winding Road alum Seyth Miersma recently got some seat time behind the wheel of the SRT Viper TA, Chrysler’s most potent road-going track weapon to date. When phrases like “world class” and “close-to-sex” litter a review, it’s safe to assume that this is a very good car indeed.
