All of those German cars are pretty great to drive, ride in, and look at, so we knew going into our time with the all-new BMW 640i Gran Coupe that the bar set was a high one indeed. Of course, knowing the track record of BMW, it’s no real surprise that the Gran Coupe lived up to the standard set by Mercedes, et al. in terms of ride quality and overall on-road poise.
Despite being a pretty bad long weekend for convertible driving—Michigan offered up a very par-for-the-course November compliment of damp, cold, cloudy days—my Thanksgiving drive did serve as a fine counterpoint experience in the 650i convertible. When I drove the car for the first go-round, it was nothing but top-down and sunny-weather driving through the balmy Mexican countryside. That’s nice and all, but it certainly didn’t give me much of a frame of reference for cold-weather driving in the new 6er, nor really for a lot of top-up stuff.
Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful, if slightly complex place to visit and to drive cars. Baja Mexico’s most famous resort town sparkles on the beach next to the Sea of Cortez, offering rest and relaxation to deep-pocketed luxury seekers the world over. It’s the kind of a place that real, honest-to-God 650i convertible owners might opt to vacation in, though they probably wouldn’t think to drive there. Test.
BMW has officially taken the wraps off of the redesigned 6-Series. While we saw the droptop 6er at last November’s LA Auto Show, this is our first official look at the heavily restyled hardtop. The sole engine choice in the 650i is the beefy 4.4-liter biturbocharged V-8 that is found in the 550i, 750i, and xDrive50i versions of the X5 and X6.
Apparently the weather was nice in Munich, because we have fresh spy shots of the next BMW 6-Series with the top down. The swirly BMW camouflage does a good job, as usual, of obscuring the majority of the new 6er’s body details, but a few things can be observed from our photos.
