Buyer’s Guide: Mid-Size Luxury Sedans

The mid-size luxury segment is nearly always a hotly contested battlefield, and these days are no exception. Over the last weeks and months we’ve spent a lot of time driving the new (or newish) entries from Acura, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Saab, and more, so we thought it high time to bring together a feature that lays bare what’s on offer. We did refrain from including the—often wildly different—performance models here (AMG, M, V, etc.). That’s a guide for a different day.

Base Versus Loaded: 2011 Mini Cooper S

We love the Mini Cooper S as a budget driver’s car. It’s quick, communicative, eager to rotate, and economical. But the budget goes out the window when we start playing with the manufacturer’s configuration tool. With the oodles of packages and accessories, we managed to make our Cooper S more costly in options alone than the price of the base car. Have a look.

Base Versus Loaded: 2011 BMW 335i Sedan

After downloading all of the pricing information about Ford’s Mustang GT in last week’s BVL, we thought we’d take on a popular German target with BMW’s 3-Series this week. Of course, when looked at from the 328i up through the M3 variants, there are an awful lot of legitimately different cars that wear the 3 for BMW, so, for this session, we narrowed the field down to simply the 335i sedan. As you’ll see, that limitation doesn’t mean that we didn’t find a wide gulf in price, from Base up to Loaded.

First Look: 2012 Mini Cooper S Inspired By Goodwood

Does $400,000 seem just a bit too dear for that shiny new Phantom you spotted at your local Rolls-Royce dealership? We thought so. Thankfully, Mini, Rolls-Royce’s corporate brother and countryman (no pun intended) has an excellent way of delivering the luxury afforded by the Spirit of Ecstasy in a slightly more affordable package. It’s called the Mini Goodwood.

First Look: 2010 Saab 9-5

For a while, the future of Saab looked glum. Thankfully, the fine folks at Koenigsegg have scooped up the Scandinavian automaker and now the future doesn’t look so bad. The current 9-5 was a mess of General Motors influence on an aging platform and the end result was really quite bad, but from the details and images that we have on the new 9-5, it looks like Saab might be back in the game again.

First Look: 2010 Subaru Outback Gets Legacy Treatment

Just like the Legacy sedan, the Subaru Outback receives some substantial updates for the 2010 model year. The revised Legacy’s design language is very much present on the Outback, though it looks a bit more awkward in this tall wagon guise. Speaking of tall, the 2010 Outback’s ground clearance has been increased to a total of 8.7 inches, giving it more of a crossover stance rather than an Allroad-esque wagon.
