Rumors: Model News—Chevrolet Camaro Z28 All But A Sure Thing

Fans of the Chevrolet Camaro have been treated to some serious TLC by General Motors as of late. The Camaro ZL1 has been more than holding its own against the Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 in a battery of magazine comparison tests. In fact, it’s beaten the mighty Mustang in our very own comparo. And now, the Camaro faithful may have even more reason to celebrate—fan site GMAuthority came across a freshly filed GM patent for the name “Z28”.

We reported on an interesting bit of Camaro Z28 evidence back in May when we stumbled across a post on Camaro5. User “showstopper” found Z28 markings on a diffuser bracket for his ZL1. That, combined with the patent filing for the name, could spell exciting things for enthusiasts.

Currently, it is unclear what kind of Camaro that hallowed moniker will adorn. Speculation has abounded that a new Z28 model could outmuscle the supercharged ZL1, or it could be launched as a lighter, more track-focused model as evidence by a report on Jalopnik from February 2011. It could also become a replacement for the current Camaro SS when that name is given to a new Chevy sedan sometime next year.
