Rumors: 2015 BMW M2 Rendered, Specs Detailed

Cars, News I By Winding Road Staff I October 16, 2014
While the new M3 sedan and M4 coupe are highly capable on the racetrack and adept at handling daily driver duties, over the years, the steady increase in both physical size and price tags of those cars have caused some hemming and hawing from BMW fans who long for the simpler days of the 2002 and the E30 M3. But fear not, faithful enthusiasts – BMW has not forgotten about you. The M2 is coming, and it’s shaping up to be a very compelling option.

Rendered by the folks at the UK’s Car magazine, the M2 will pick up where the revered 2011 BMW 1M left off, and much like the 1M, the M2 is expected to borrow heavily from its M3/M4 siblings. According to Car, that will include the twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six cylinder engine, though it’s said that the engine will be detuned from the 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet offered in its M3/M4 configuration. Output is expected to be reduced to 369 hp and 384 lb-ft, though considering the size of the 2-Series coupe, that should be more than enough grunt to get this car moving in a hurry.

Visually, the M2 ratchets up the aggression from the M235i with more muscular bodywork, a more pronounced ducktail spoiler, quad exhaust tips, larger air intakes, and the requisite M badging. The folks at Car mention that their rendering of the M2 comes from “detailed insider information from the design studio in Munich”, but it’s worth pointing out that recent spy shots of the new M2 testing at the Nurburgring seem to indicate that the final design may have a slightly tamer front fascia than the renderings suggest.

Either way, it shouldn’t be long before we get an official announcement from BMW detailing the new M2. Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
