Kia has announced its intention to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) in the fourth quarter of 2024. Joining other major OEM’s, this initiative promises to offer Kia EV owners unprecedented access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, comprising approximately 12,000 charging stations strategically located across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Kia’s decision to integrate NACS into its electric vehicles signifies a remarkable step forward in the ongoing evolution of EV charging standards. With the production of NACS ports commencing within U.S.-assembled Kia EVs, the automaker aims to enhance the charging experience for its customers, making high-speed charging more accessible and convenient than ever before.
The NACS standard is poised to transform the way Kia EV owners interact with their vehicles and the charging infrastructure. Existing owners of Kia’s Niro EV and EV6, as well as future owners of the upcoming EV9, will be able to seamlessly connect to Tesla’s Superchargers using a forthcoming NACS adapter and software updates. This innovation will enable Kia drivers to tap into Tesla’s extensive charging network for added convenience and flexibility.
Seungkyu (Sean) Yoon, President & CEO of Kia North America and Kia America, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing electrified mobility. Yoon stated, “As a leader in electrified mobility, Kia offers a growing number of world-class EVs with high-speed DC charging capabilities that will now be supported by the NACS charging network.” He further expressed optimism about the impact of this development on customer satisfaction and the overall EV ownership experience.
One of the key advantages for Kia EV owners will be the ease of use and payment convenience associated with Tesla’s Supercharger network. Once a software upgrade is completed, Kia Connect app users will gain access to Tesla Superchargers and benefit from the seamless autopay functionality. This integration will enable Kia EV owners to search for, locate, and navigate to available Tesla Superchargers directly through their vehicle’s infotainment screen or on their smartphones. They will also have access to real-time information regarding charger availability, status, and pricing, simplifying the charging process and ensuring a stress-free EV ownership experience.
Moreover, the Korean manufacture’s plans to offer CCS1-to-NACS adapters starting in Q1 2025 indicate the company’s dedication to providing an extensive charging solution for its entire EV lineup. This forward-thinking approach aims to make high-speed charging accessible to nearly all Kia EV owners, further cementing the brand’s commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction.
