WRR TV: Watch the Closest Finish in PWC GTS Class History

Watch as Mark Wilkins in the #38 Kia Optima manages to secure the closest ever GTS margin of victory, 0.039 of a second, over Alec Udell in the #17 Watson Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302S during the Pirelli World Challenge Race 2 at Streets of Toronto.

Starting in second place, Udell had the edge on Wilkins pace-wise everywhere on the 1.755-mile Toronto street circuit except the straights. Wilkins consistently opened up the gap on Udell on the straights while Udell would close in through the corners. No more than a few tenths separated them throughout most of the race.

Coming out of Turn 11 and onto the final straight of the race, Udell made one final move for the lead and nearly overtook Wilkins as they approached the finish but came up less than half a car length short as they crossed the line. Another hundred yards of tarmac and the race might have had a different outcome.

“I have to say Alec Udell drove a fantastic race,” said Wilkins. “He was clean, we had a great battle, and he made me drive down the inside of the track. That made it fun and stressful at the same time! I used up those front tires.”

The 0.039 winning margin breaks the previous mark of 0.326 of a second set by Paul Brown over Peter Cunningham at Mid-Ohio in 2011.
