It took a few runs up the rev ladder for us to notice it, but the sweet spot—where the exhaust note decants audibly in the desert air at exactly the same moment that the engine is spinning up power in a rising wave of giddy excess—is a moving target between 6000 and about 6500 rpm. Hit that spot in third gear, with the throttle opened all the way up, and the asphalt swinging away ahead of you in a gentle, hot arc, and you’ll be forgiven by any man, woman, or being that you swear fealty to for thinking that you’ve stepped into heaven’s earthly boundaries.
We were recently lucky enough to have Mazda’s RX-8 R3 in the Winding Road office for a week. Truly touched by the car’s utter brilliance for a relatively small sum of money, Editorial Director Tom Martin declared that he could justify the Mazda’s abilities versus any sporting car on sale today.
This weekend, Audi announced the R8 GT, a lighter, more hardcore version of the R8 V10.

As 2009 comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the many cars that have stood out over the past decade. What’s not to love about the Audi R8? Well, besides the R-tronic transmission. This is one of the sexiest supercars that we’ve been able to get our hands on, and Audi has now upped the ante on its R8 hotness by removing the roof. The R8 Spyder will be hitting our shores next year in 5.2 V-10 guise, and we’re already planning our summer drive routes for this exotic droptop.
