Brand New Classic: 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4

If you grew up playing the original Gran Turismo (as many of the Winding Road staff did), you are intimately familiar with the fabled badges of Japanese performance cars. The Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7, and Toyota Supra dominated our waking hours, while the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R kept us waking in a cold sweat.

Neko Case’s 1967 Mercury Cougar Raffled For Charity

It’s called The Mercury Cougar-Rama Muscle Car ‘Splosion. Musician Neko Case, whose album cover for Middle Cyclone features her perched atop a 1967 Mercury Cougar (remember the list?), is giving that very car away in a drawing to benefit 826 National, a family of nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping children with creative writing (they’ve made automotive news before).

Secondhand Gems: $20,000 Tailgaters

After last month’s voyage into the realm of “cheap” supercars, offering up a selection of truly affordable performance machines with accommodating backsides seemed the perfect antithesis. Not all motoring enjoyment takes place at speed, and though we’re currently roasting away in the dog days of summer, autumn tailgating adventures will soon bewitch the football faithful around the country. You know the season well—crowded parking lots packed with people dressed in sweaters and sweatshirts, the air a delicious mix of brats, burgers, beer, and burning leaves. Traditional vehicles for such venues are ones with plenty of room out back, so weekend warriors can cook, feast, and down enough adult beverages to officially be labeled a distillery.

Keepers: Pontiac Fiero GT—Shopping

You’ve seen Fieros. Most likely you’ve seen some for sale. You may even have spotted a Fiero priced so low that you thought about buying it, just to satisfy your long standing curiosity about this car. Of course, being priced so low, odds are the car needed something significant, like, say, a new engine and transmission, right? This could well be the case, but then again, maybe it isn’t.

Status Of The Fleet: Ford Fleet Vehicle Presentation

“Fleet” is no longer a dirty word at Ford. That was the focus (we know, bad pun) of the presentation we just viewed at Ford’s Dearborn Development Center. Ford was very quick to explain the dominance of the Blue Oval in fleets nationwide, from police departments, to utility companies, to government fleets. The crown jewel of Ford’s fleet efforts is the new Taurus-based Police Interceptor, which was on display in Dearborn.

Flip This Car: 1989 Ford Taurus SHO

The notion of finding a cheap car, fixing it up, and flipping it for cash has been a tried and true practice for shade tree mechanics since the early days of motoring. As the title suggests, our goal for this endeavor is to do just that, but being that this is Winding Road and not some generic used car sales guide, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Keepers: Acura Integra Type R—Shopping

Don’t think for a moment that there aren’t a couple million Acura Integras with big wings, body kits, and faux R badges running around the country. These clones can make finding a true R something of a challenge, but there are some sure-fire ways to separate the purebloods from the mixed breeds.

Keepers: GMC Syclone/Typhoon—Shopping

The Syclone/Typhoon (often referred to as SyTy by owners and enthusiasts) super trucks were always intended to be niche, limited-production vehicles. Save for a few outlier units in 1992, Syclones were exclusive to the 1991 model year and exclusively black, while Typhoons offered more color and less exclusivity thanks to a production run that spanned 1992 and 1993. As one would expect, the Typhoon is a bit easier to find; nearly 5000 came off the assembly line during its two-year run as opposed to 3000 Syclones, so while these trucks are rather rare, they’re not impossible to find.
