Porsche enthusiasts, get ready for a new era of Boxster. The debut of the highly-anticipated Porsche Boxster 983 EV is expected to take place in 2025, and the latest spy shots and videos show the electric Boxster doing laps at the famed Nürburgring race track. The beloved sports car is undergoing a major transformation, as the German automaker prepares to launch an all-electric version of the Boxster.
The spy shots reveal that brand has done its best to disguise the Porsche Boxster 983 EV with its usual black camouflage and cladding. However, there are a few telltale signs that this isn’t your typical gasoline-powered sports car. For instance, the center-exit exhaust tip is fake and merely part of the camouflage that conceals the rear-end styling. Above the false outlet and license plate, there is a cutout for the charge port, which has been seen in previous spy photos.
According to reports, it is expected that the Porsche Boxster 983 EV is to use a dedicated architecture, with nothing from the current model carrying over. While we don’t know much about the car’s powertrain yet, it’s likely to debut with a single-motor setup powering the rear wheels. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant is also expected to arrive later. It’s unclear if the Cayman variant will debut alongside the electric Boxster, but we are confident in saying YES.
Inside the cabin, Porsche is expected to create a high-tech, futuristic driving experience for its customers. We’re expecting to see screens throughout, but the exact details of the car’s interior remain a mystery.
One thing that’s clear is that the new Porsche Boxster 983 EV will mark the end of the model’s turbocharged flat-four and naturally aspirated flat-six engines. With Porsche expecting electric vehicles to account for more than 80% of its sales by 2030, it’s evident that the company is moving full steam ahead into the EV market.
It’s still uncertain how Porsche will package the electric sports car, but we can expect the company to draw on components from its other offerings. The Premium Platform Electric (PPE) that Porsche is co-developing with Audi is a likely source of hardware, as it will underpin the upcoming Macan EV and Q6 E-Tron.
