Preview: 2014 Mazda USCC Prototype Racer

Cars, News I By Winding Road Staff I January 09, 2014

Mazda has taken the wraps off its newest prototype, which is set to compete in this year’s Tudor United SportsCar Championship. Powered by 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel motor, it is the sole diesel-powered prototype in the series.

Despite its diminutive displacement, the 315lb turbocharged engine is capable of some impressive numbers – 450 hp and 580 lb-ft of torque, with a redline of 5,200 rpm. The engine’s block and cylinder head are aluminum, and turbocharging will be provided by a Garrett Motorsports unit. Bosch will be taking care of the ECU tuning and the motor will be hooked to a paddle-shifted Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission.
With a carbon-fiber monocoque, the new prototype should be tipping the scales at about 1980 pounds, and capable of approximately 186mph in low downforce configuration.
Mazda plans to bring two prototypes to this year’s USCC, with Sylvain Tremblay and Tom Long in the #70 car, while Joel Miller and Tristan Nunez will pilot the #07 car. An additional driver for each car is expected to be announced as the Rolex 24 Hours approaches.
