Genesis, the luxury car brand owned by Hyundai, has unveiled its latest creation, the GV80 Coupe Concept, at the New York International Auto Show. As with many other luxury car brands, Genesis has jumped on the coupe-shaped SUV trend, but the GV80 Coupe takes the already striking design of the GV80 to a whole new level.

From the front, the concept is instantly recognizable as a GV80, but with a much more dramatic and aggressive look. The signature split-LED running lights extend around the front wheel arches and down the quarter panels, while the front fascia is more aggressively styled with black accents around the lower bodywork. The concept also features large five-spoke wheels that contrast the bright Magma color scheme, giving it a strong curb presence.

Inspired by the X Speedium Coupe Concept, the shape of the GV80 Coupe gives it a sporty look, accented by an upturned ducktail spoiler at the rear. While this does reduce practicality inside, the shape is attractive and eye-catching. The concept also features a carbon fiber roof, which lowers the center of gravity and improves handling.

The interior is just as stunning as the exterior, with a four-passenger configuration featuring Recaro bucket seats in both rows. The seats and much of the interior are finished in grey Alcantara, with accent stitching adding bright contrasts. The seatbacks are carbon-backed and offer hand pumps to adjust bolstering. Interior tech looks production-ready, with a touchscreen and digital gauge cluster accompanied by physical controls for climate and safety features.

While the standard GV80 comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 375 horsepower, the GV80 Coupe Concept is decidedly sportier and could potentially borrow the powertrain from the G90 sedan, which uses an electric supercharger to make 409 horsepower. Genesis executives have said that this SUV is headed for production as the automaker’s sendoff to internal combustion, indicating that it will be a more aggressive SUV than what we’re used to seeing from the brand.

Genesis has confirmed that the GV80 Coupe will go into production, but there’s no word yet on when it will go on sale or for how much. It’s likely to be priced in the high-$70,000 range, based on the price tag of the standard GV80 and its competitors. It’s unclear if the SUV will be a limited-production vehicle, given Genesis’ desire to begin phasing out internal combustion engines in 2025.
