On Thursday night, Ram unveiled their electric pickup concept to challenge Tesla, Ford, and GMC. It looks great, and has some very innovative features, including; unique storage on the side of the bed, a one-piece electrochromatic glass roof, grand saloon doors that open 90° to a B-pillarless cabin, and most interesting – 3rd row rear jump seats unfold from the midgate to accommodate extra passengers and feature a removable lower portion that functions as a stadium seat for tailgating.
However, this new full-size electric pickup trend has us thinking: for city-dwellers, we wish this electrification would be applied to mid-size trucks. The virtue of the midgate is really emphasized when you shorten the whole truck to 210” from 230” and thus you can park it in parking garages or on the street without a 10 min search. The midgate recognizes that huge items are rare. If you do the math, you could take this new Ram, lose the jump seats (18”?) and shorten the bed from 5.5’ to 5’. That shortens the RAM overall by 2’, which gives 208” overall – that’s the length of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
