WR TV: 2014 RAM Power Wagon

RAM has a somewhat unique niche with the RAM 2500-based Power Wagon. Less of a bespoke high speed offroader – Mopar has the RAM Runner for that kind of work – the Power Wagon is designed to be something of a heavy duty jack of all trades. To that end, the Power Wagon is designed to be highly capable in a variety of demanding situations, from traversing harsh terrain and fording streams to assisting disabled vehicles with its 12,800 pound winch and using its class five trailer hitch and 10,800 pound tow capacity to pull some serious cargo.

Ford, Chrysler Truck Rivalry Heats Up As Torque Ratings Rise

Just as the horsepower rivalry between the Big Three has spawned increasingly more capable sports cars and muscle cars, the war to claim the top spot in the world of pickups has evolved into a tit for tat battle of one-upmanship. While horsepower is the measurement that go-fast fanatics salivate over, in the realm of trucks, it’s torque that dictates who’s the king of hill in terms of capability. Over the course of the last few days, both Ford and Chrysler have traded blows that have caused the crown bounce back and forth across Detroit this month. But regardless of where it lands, it spells good news for consumers.

RAM Adopts SAE Trailer Towing Standard to Provide Real World Ratings

The Society of Automotive Engineers is an entity comprised of more than 138,000 engineers from the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries which creates testing standards and practices for certifying performance measurements for vehicles. We recently saw SAE involvement in new Chrysler products in regards to the horsepower ratings in the new supercharged engine in the Dodge Challenger and (potentially) the Dodge Charger. Now, Chrysler’s RAM truck division has decided to adopt the SAE’s newest J2807 towing standard across their entire truck line – the only manufacture to do so thus far. However, the real story here is that the SAE has a standard by which manufactures’ trucks can be rated by a universal measurement, rather than ones designed by the manufacturers to meet target numbers under specific conditions.

Update: 2013 Dodge Charger Pursuit

Yes, they gave us a police car. Complete with functioning lights, sirens, and loudspeakers (which many journalists used to heckle their compatriots at the track’s stop signs and crossings), driving the Charger Pursuit wasn’t so much an objective from an editorial standpoint, but more of a fun activity.

Update: 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

Part of the issue, we think, has to do with the focus of these trucks. Aimed at on-road performance, they lacked the utility of a traditional pickup (due to their sporty tires and suspensions) while being outrun and outhandled by equal or lower-priced performance cars. Automobiles are governed by the laws of physics, and a truck-based performance vehicle is never going to have the same potential as a car-based performance vehicle. The Raptor works because it doesn’t try to beat cars at their own game. It is a truck, first and foremost.

Update: Ram 1500 ST Crew Cab 4X4 — Interior

The ST isn’t listed on Ram’s consumer or media website. It’s actually identical to the Ram 1500 Tradesman, but is considered a “fleet-only” vehicle. It’s something for utility companies or construction firms to buy in bulk, and at a reasonable price.

Quick Drive: 2013 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 4X2

Having been on sale since 2007, the current range of GM trucks is, to put it gently, old as hell. This is thrown into particularly stark contrast after driving the revised Ram 1500 or any of the trucks from Ford. Unfortunately, for GM, that’s exactly what we did barely a week before receiving our Sierra Denali. Even the areas where the Denali excels (interior trim, engines), it doesn’t distance itself enough from the competition to earn our recommendation.

Driven: 2013 Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4X4 3.6

On the road, the 2013 Ram 1500 was nothing less than the smoothest-riding pickup we’ve ever tested. Secondary motion, notably that obnoxious shuddering sound that you hear and feel when you hit a big bump in a regular truck, was precisely controlled. It’s this quality that gives the Ram a feeling of real solidity. What pass for potholes in Tennessee just couldn’t disrupt the smooth ride, with little in the way of impact noises or other disruptions. There was some vertical motion over undulating roads, but by and large the Ram feels nicely planted and composed.

Driven: 2012 Ram Power Wagon 4X4 Crew Cab

Among truck aficionados, the Power Wagon is considered one of the most off-road capable vehicles of its type, representing a nice blend of utility and off-road moxie—a reputation it has the credentials to support. There are, however, some downsides.

Secondhand Gems: $30,000 Truckin’

We’ll consider style, toughness, guts, and since many trucks now serve as primary family vehicles, we’ll look at interior appointments as well. That means everything on the list will be a full-blown four-door pickup. Everything will have four-wheel drive, and though flat-out performance isn’t a key point in this contest, we’ll still be aware of machines that make us grin. We’ll stick with half- and three-quarter ton trucks since they represent the majority of truck sales, and we’ll showcase both gasoline and diesel options.

Detroit 2011: Chrysler Highlights Mopar Brand With Six Different Models

When talking about factory-backed aftermarket tuners, fewer names are held in higher regard than Mopar. The brand was synonymous with Dodge and Plymouth performance vehicles during the muscle car wars of the 1960s. Since then, it has turned from pure performance tuner to a manufacturer of aftermarket items for all the brands under the Chrysler umbrella. Seeing an opportunity to demonstrate the its expertise, Chrysler is showing several Moparized vehicles at this year’s North American International Auto Show.

Quick Drive: 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport R/T 4×2

The “performance truck” is in keeping with the general drift of pickup trucks sold in the US in the Swiss Army Knife direction. There is a definite appeal to the idea of a vehicle that can do many things: take the kids to school, haul kitchen cabinets home, pick up a plasma TV, and go on an off-road expedition in a national park. That list of consumer needs has led to the popularity of full-size crew cab pickups. Change up the list to: commute comfortably to work, pick up a plasma TV from Best Buy, haul kitchen cabinets home, and deliver some semblance of quickness and responsiveness while doing it all and you get various sport trucks like the Toyota X-Runner, the Ford Raptor and this week’s Quick Drive, the Dodge Ram 1500 R/T.

Quick Drive: 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4×4

True to its image within the sedan/coupe world, it seems that Dodge is hoping to build a reputation for building the most muscle car-like trucks around. The Ram 1500, with its 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, absolutely backs this up. Lots of full size pickup trucks have shared V-8 motors with sports cars of the same brand, but Dodge has seemingly kept more of the sports car flavor in its new Ram trucks than most are willing to. The exhaust note is loud and meaty, transmission seems to be tuned for more acceleration than most big pickups, and, of course, the multi-link coil rear suspension offers ride and handling traits that feel a lot more car-like. This Ram is a real sports truck.
