New Drivers Selected For Spec MX-5 Challenge And Chance to Win $100,000 Grand Prize

Six of the first 10 drivers have been selected for the inaugural season of the Spec MX-5 Challenge Central Series. Each of these drivers is aiming for the regional championship and a shot at the season-ending grand prize of $100,000 supported by Mazda Motorsports, Yokohama Tire, Winding Road Racing and Atlanta Speedwerks. These drivers hope to join qualifying participants in the East Series for the 2018 Spec MX-5 Challenge Championships at Road Atlanta in November.

“We are very pleased with the experience level of the drivers who have been selected for the first Spec MX-5 Challenge,” said Tom Martin, Series Director. “We have positioned the Challenge as a driver development series, and the drivers we have picked have shown a dedication to developing their skills and advancing their careers.”

The first six Central Region drivers are:

  • Clayton Cavell, Indianapolis, IN. Clayton Cavell, 32, is a long-time track day participant in PCA and NASA HPDE. Clayton moved to Spec Miata racing in 2017 and ran a full SCCA regional schedule.
  • Noah Grey, Dana Point, CA. Noah Grey, 17, has been karting competitively since he was 6, winning several championships. Noah moved to running Spec Miata in 2015 and has participated in the Teen Mazda Challenge multiple times.
  • Zachry Lee, San Antonio, TX. Zach Lee, 44, began racing on motorcycles, including AMA Supermoto. He then moved to racing cars with Skip Barber in 2012 and has run in Global MX-5 Cup since 2016.
  • Tom Martin, Austin, TX. Tom Martin, 30, started his racing career with a Skip Barber open wheel school at age 16 and then moved to karts and Formula SAE. After college, he ran Spec Miata and then moved to Global MX-5 Cup for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
  • Matt Million, San Marcos, CA. Matt Million, 17, began racing in karts at the age of 5, winning club and IKF regional events. He then moved to Spec Miata at the age of 13, participated in the Teen Mazda Challenge and was chosen as a semifinalist for the Mazda Road to 24 Shootout.
  • Harry Voigt, Lone Tree, CO. Harry Voigt, 16, began in karts with SKUSA and then moved to Spec Miata and participated in the Teen Mazda Challenge. In 2017, Harry ran the Skip Barber MX-5 Winter Series, where he was champion and rookie-of-the-year.

While the East Region driver lineup is full, several spots are still open in the Central Region. The Spec MX-5 Challenge Central Series kicks of on March 23 at NCM Motorsports Park, a new and highly-praised facility adjacent to the National Corvette Museum.

About Spec MX-5 Challenge

Spec MX-5 Challenge is an affordable pro road racing series with a focus on driver development and a top prize of $100,000. In 2018, its ten-race regular season in the Central region will run at NCM Motorsports Park, Circuit of The Americas, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit and NOLA Raceway Park. The ten-race East season will run at Virginia International Raceway, Summit Point Raceway, Road Atlanta and Monticello Motor Club. The top seven drivers from each region will compete at a championship-deciding event at Road Atlanta in November. The twenty drivers selected for the series pay $45,000 and receive full arrive-and-drive services, including transport, entry fees, tires, fuel, mechanical work, engineering and a race car.
