To celebrate International Women’s Day, an excellent tongue-in-cheek advertisement was aired to “Introduce the Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition.” The ad presents a fictitious, limited-edition version of the popular Ford Explorer SUV that is designed exclusively for men, with features like windshield wipers and turn signals removed. However, the catch is that all of these “manly” features that are missing were actually invented by women, making the ad a playful way to highlight the contributions of women in the automotive industry.
Ford created a dedicated website which features a gallery of influential women who have made significant contributions to the automotive industry, including Hedy Lamarr, who invented a frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology that is now used in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; Florence Lawrence, who invented the turn signal and brake light; and Mary Anderson, who invented the windshield wiper.
The ad is intended to be humorous and lighthearted while also promoting gender equality and acknowledging the contributions of women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
