Racers know there’s a collection of equipment they’re required to have if they want to go racing – a compliant helmet, head and neck restraint, race suit, gloves and shoes are mandated by most major sanctions if you want to go wheel-to-wheel racing. But the story doesn’t end there. While you might be in compliance with sanction guidelines without them, these ten items are so vital to a successful day at the track that they might as well be in the rulebook.
It may seem like the recipe for a podium finish begins and ends with the car and the driver, but having a well-organized pit area and properly equipped crew is crucial factor for success on the track as well. Some of these items might seem like incidental conveniences, but once the race starts, knowing exactly where, say, your tire pressure gauge is can be the difference between a champagne shower and a warm consolation beer. Here’s a few items that every racer should always have trackside.
Passing through 4th gear, the shift lights are indicating I’d better shift to 5th gear quickly. With 5th gear engaged I tell my right foot to stay on the floor through the left hand kink that is looming ahead. As I turn-in the rear gets light which is quickly followed by counter-steering and telling myself, “We need to make that better.”
