Thursday is opening night for Car Talk: The Musical!!! The play was written and directed by Suffolk University professor Wesley Savick, and will be performed at Suffolk’s Modern Theatre. Tom and Ray Magliozzi, hosts of NPR’s Car Talk, even lent their recorded voices for the role of the Wizard of Cahs.
The play’s hero, the feckless Russell “Rusty” Fenders, ends up falling in love with Miata C. La Chassis, who leads him to the Emerald Garage. It is there that the couple receives wisdom from the Wizard of Cahs. The show features spoofs of classic Broadway numbers, including “My Kia,” based on “Maria” from West Side Story.
Savick says that cars are a good metaphor for life, as ownership is fraught with bitterness as the car ages and breaks down.
