Formula 1 is revving up for the 2023 United States GP at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, marking the 18th round of the season. This iconic event is set to take place this weekend from October 20th to October 22nd, and here’s everything you need to know before you attend:
Special Livery for HAAS: American F1 team HAAS has unveiled a one-off livery for the 2023 United States GP, and the livery concept images have now been revealed showing the VF-23 sporting a ‘Stars & Stripes’ design including the team’s tagline for the weekend, ‘We The People’, which is the opening line of the United States Constitution.
A Decade of Thrills at COTA: The Circuit of The Americas, or COTA, has been a stable host for the F1 racing since 2012. The 2023 United States GP marks the eleventh running of the event at this venue. Formula 1’s presence in the United States has grown, with two additional races added in Miami and the highly-anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Historical Milestone: This season is historic as it’s the first time in over 40 years, since 1982, that the United States will stage three races in a single season. This underlines the growing popularity of Formula 1 in the country.
COTA’s Charm: COTA’s track layout has been a hit with drivers and fans alike. It offers fantastic racing action and provides elevated viewing areas for fans. The track’s off-track entertainment options have also played a significant role in its popularity.
Rising Popularity: Thanks to accessible TV coverage and the hit Netflix series “Drive to Survive,” Formula 1’s popularity has skyrocketed in the United States. The attendance figures reflect this surge, with 440,000 fans making the 2022 United States Grand Prix the best-attended race of the season.
Location and Off-Track Activities: COTA is conveniently located around 18 miles from downtown Austin. The city offers a wealth of activities, from live music gigs to delicious food. Be sure to explore the best off-track activities during your stay.
High Demand for Tickets: Demand for the 2023 United States GP is soaring, with most tickets already sold out. However, limited numbers of grandstand and general admission tickets are still available. You can also explore ticket packages offered by F1 Experiences, Formula 1’s official ticket partner.
Cost of Attendance: Grandstand tickets at COTA are among the most expensive on the Formula 1 calendar, but the experience justifies the cost. On average, it’s the eighth most affordable race for local fans, with tickets costing approximately 9% of the average monthly wage. A trip to the 2023 United States Grand Prix, including tickets, accommodation, and spending money, will likely cost around $2,000 USD.
Getting to the Circuit: The Circuit of The Americas offers a more traditional trackside setup, and there’s a free bus service to help you navigate around the circuit. Given the high demand for tickets, it’s advisable to arrive early to secure the best vantage points, especially if you have General Admission tickets. There are several transportation options, including affordable shuttle buses, taxis, ride-sharing, or driving yourself.
Support Races: In addition to Formula 1, three support categories will race at the 2023 United States GP. You can witness legendary cars in the Masters Historic series and the stars of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America series. Moreover, Formula 1’s all-female junior series, the F1 Academy, will race at COTA, concluding its inaugural season.
Sprint Weekend Format: Formula 1 will be utilizing the Sprint weekend format, with qualifying taking place on Friday, followed by the Sprint race on Saturday. The 2023 United States GP itself will be held on Sunday. Check the updated Trackside post for the full weekend schedule.
Off-Track Entertainment: The 2023 United States GP is not just about racing; it’s also a musical extravaganza. The circuit hosts top-notch acts, and in 2023, The Killers and Queen + Adam Lambert will headline. Enjoy their performances along with more than 20 other acts across the race weekend. Additionally, Austin will be buzzing with various events, from driver appearances to fashion shows, making it an unforgettable experience.
