Driven: 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Overall, it’s hard to argue that the GLI isn’t a good to very-good entry-level enthusiast car. With more room, and just a bit more practicality overall than its GTI sibling, only the car’s slightly less keen handling holds it back from being our go-to Volkswagen, in fact. It certainly made our Presidents’ Day a lot more interesting—we’ll take a handling loop to a white sale, any day.

The new Jetta has done away with the questionable looks (no more chrome nose!) of the current model, and instead has been given a more chiseled look, that puts it in line with the current face of the VW range.

We have just taken delivery of Volkswagen’s new Jetta TDI Cup Edition. Think of this special edition as a Jetta GLI with a diesel motor, instead of the 2.0T I-4. Our tester features a Cup-edition body kit, a six-speed DSG, sunroof, and the GTI’s signature Interlagos Plaid seats.
