If you haven’t seen Winding Road’s video catalog (the unofficial home of all of our Quick Drive and POV videos), then you might notice that they take place on the roads of southeastern Michigan. It’s no secret that Michigan is a state that is seriously lacking in twisting roads. That’s precisely why we dispatched Multimedia Editor Chris Amos down to the Great Smoky Mountains, an area known for its winding roads. Obviously, Editor Amos needed a quality car for his little video excursion, and Scion was nice enough to loan us one of our favorite sporty cars, the FR-S.
It’s an old school Friday at Winding Road, and Multimedia Editor Amos put together a video of a classic hot sedan from… Volvo? Yes, the respectable, tame, conservative, safe Swedish brand actually has quite a bit of history when it comes to performance. In particular, it’s R models were highly sought after for their restrained aesthetics and potent, turbocharged engines.
Throughout those adventures, the tossability and fun-to-drive nature of the CX-5 remained a talking point. A bigger talking point, though, was the absolute lack of power. Mazda built an entertaining crossover, but it was too underpowered to live up to its suspension’s potential. Thankfully, that’s been solved for the 2014 model year. Joining the 155-horsepower, 150-pound-foot, 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-pot is the brawnier 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder from the Mazda6 (review coming very soon).
