With five decades of heritage and over 9 million examples sold, the Mustang has become an American institution. It’s long been known that Ford was planning something big for 2015, the Mustang’s 50th anniversary. In recent months, rumors and speculation about the new car hit a fever pitch, but aside from the occasional spy shot of test mule cars clad in extensive camouflage, details about the new pony car have been achingly scarce. There’s a misconception that since the death of the S2000, Honda’s only really “fun” car is the Civic Si (with respect to the tossable, but ultimately underpowered CR-Z). We’d dispute this point of view, and we think you would too, if you’d just got done testing Honda’s new Accord Coupe.
We were so busy preparing our BBQ parties, nursing our first-of-the-season sun burns, watching racing, and lining up new convertibles to drive this last weekend, that we almost missed the fact the Chevrolet dropped the sheet on a new, special edition Camaro as well as details relevant to the 2012 Camaro line.
When the concept of Keepers was bouncing around the NextAutos office, there was a tinge of trepidation about discussing Mustangs and Camaros. Aside from the fanatical, insanely-large following enjoyed by both cars, they’ve been covered, featured, mentioned, compared, discussed, reviewed, and otherwise overblown by just about every publication on the planet. As such, you’ll never likely never see a Mustang GT or Camaro Z28 in this neck of NextAutos cyberspace, but some of the specialty models do stand a chance, such as the 1999 and 2001 Mustang SVT Cobra.
