In this Point-of-view video we take a ride in the hybrid NSX through some California canyons
It looks like the long and at times difficult gestation of the new Acura NSX is finally coming to a close, as Acura confirmed today that the production-spec NSX would make its official debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show on Jan. 12, 2015. And to whet our appetites, Acura has also released a handful of teaser images of the new sports car.
Production time frames for the introduction of the new Acura NSX have been vague, but rumors had been circulating earlier this year that a production-based test mule might was expected to make an appearance at Goodwood last month, but those speculations never became a reality. This week, spy photographers at Nurburgring caught a glimpse of an NSX prototype lapping the ‘Ring in what appeared to be near-production form, reigniting hopes that the hybrid supercar might soon break cover. Unfortunately, events seen today at the track seem to indicate that the NSX might not be quite ready for primetime just yet.
Honda started toying around with the idea of building a supercar in the early 1980s when it teamed up with famed Italian design house Pininfarina to present a concept called Honda Pininfarina Xperimental (HP-X) at the 1984 edition of the Turin Motor Show. Powered by a 2.0-liter V6 engine, the HP-X was merely a futuristic-looking design study that was never seriously considered for mass production but it showed Honda was already thinking beyond economy cars.
New details about the long awaited return of the Acura NSX emerged today from the Tokyo Motor Show. Honda has announced that thrust for the mid-engined, direct injected, V6 powered hybrid sportscar will aided by the addition of two turbochargers.
Acura had been teasing the NSX prototype up until its first live lap at the Mid-Ohio Indy 200 race on August 4. Now we can see more photos and video from that running debut.
Acura has posted a photo on Twitter of a running NSX prototype on what appears to be a test track. In addition, it announced that the car will take a lap on live television ahead of the Mid-Ohio Indy 200 on Sunday, August 4.
We’ve been patiently awaiting further news about the production of Acura’s new NSX hybrid supercar. Finally, Acura has announced that it will build the NSX at a new Performance Manufacturing Center adjacent to Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio.
Jerry Seinfeld’s love affair with Porsche appears to be at an end, as the funny man is starring in a 60-second TV add for Acura, set to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday. Joining Seinfeld is the new NSX, a slightly perturbed owner, and Jay Leno. And there’s a rocket pack.
Once again, ladies and gentlemen, we have a Acura NSX future to be excited about. Yes, we’ve been down this path before, with a concept car that was lost in the rubble of the 2008 financial meltdown (and reportedly shut down even before that by execs who felt the last car was a move in the wrong direction), but hope springs eternal here at Cobo, and we want this Greenformance supercar to see the light of day.
