Presented for the seventh year in a row at LA, the GCOY recognizes the most fuel efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles of the year.

List: Ten Cars That Would Make Great Convertibles

It’s no secret that there is near-universal love for convertibles here in the Winding Road offices (with the notable exception of cabriolet-hater John Beltz Snyder). In fact, we have an unwritten rule here at WR HQ, that unless it is raining, the top must be down, regardless of other weather conditions. The problem is, convertibles are, for the most part, a precious commodity.

2011 Winding Road Involvement Index Awards

Involvement matters. That’s the heart of the sermon we’ve been preaching for the last six years now. To drive fast is fun, to go around a corner neatly is admirable, to be luxurious is lovely; but to do all of those things and more in a way that enhances the driver/machine relationship is special indeed. When we first started Winding Road, we made it clear that we wanted to have a conversation with readers about the vehicles that we found to be exciting, not because they measured well, but because they inveigled many of our senses most of the time we were driving.

List: Top 15 Asian Cars From Winding Road’s Involvement Index 2.0

The Involvement Index Awards draw near, folks, in our upcoming issue of Winding Road. We’ve already brought you our most involving American cars, all-wheel-drive cars, and the overall most involving cars per dollar. Now it’s time to take a look at the highest-rated Asian cars that we’ve driven since the inauguration of the Winding Road Involvement Index 2.0.

List: The 15 Most Involving Cars Per Dollar

We came across an interesting statistic while working on the Quick Drive of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X SE last week. By cross referencing the Evo’s score on the Involvement Index, we discovered that each point of involvement would cost about $411. Compare that to our Index-topping Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sports, which with a $2.58-million price tag will cost approximately $26,000 per point, and you see the bargain that the Evo represents.

Quick Drive: 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X SE

My fiancé, Molly, is really used to my having a couple of new cars to test out every week and, like anybody, makes a kind of subconscious judgment about each one as soon as she gets inside for the first time. Of course, even for the experienced driver/passenger, sometimes that means you make snap decisions that are dead wrong.

Driven: 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Regardless of engine, the Passat was quite simply one of the best mid-sizers in terms of ride and handling that we’d experienced in some time. The damping walked a perfect line between sportiness and comfort, with very little lateral movement, even under hard cornering. Aggressive brake and throttle inputs didn’t do much to disturb the car either. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the most communicative of vehicles. It was difficult to feel out things like grip levels and cornering loads due to the lack of movement through the suspension.

Facebook List: Your Top 10 Favorite Summer Cars

Yep, summer has officially started, which means that if you haven’t made some serious driving plans yet, you had better get a move on. We asked our Facebook fans to tell us which cars they thought were the very best for driving during the warm months. The answers were mostly convertible based, which is good, but a few, inspiring coupes snuck in for good measure, too.

Quick Guide To Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The Nissan Leaf will make its motorsports debut later this month at the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs on June 26. It will be competing in the Electric division (a new and relatively small division). With the evolution of the PPIHC taking place before our very eyes, we thought it a good opportunity to review the various divisions that will be competing this year.

Brand New Classic: 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4

If you grew up playing the original Gran Turismo (as many of the Winding Road staff did), you are intimately familiar with the fabled badges of Japanese performance cars. The Honda NSX, Mazda RX-7, and Toyota Supra dominated our waking hours, while the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R kept us waking in a cold sweat.

Quick Drive: 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart

The last time we had a Ralliart – a sedan – I was quite charmed. The Ralliart has a fun level of power, a well-controlled suspension, and one of the best ATM transmissions around (which Mitsubishi calls SST – a dual clutch system). As a mini-Evo for those who want SST and don’t have the coin for the big hitter, it seemed like a very attractive package. I did feel that power was a smidge lower than one might want, as was grip on the street.

Quick Drive: 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback GTS

I like the Lancer GTS sedan, and I really like the Lancer Sportback Ralliart, so the prospect of having the more useful five-door body style, with a slightly less potent motor seems like a good idea. In actuality though, this car never really came together for me as a complete package.

Quick Drive: 2011 Audi S4

The last time we had an S4 in the office, it was for the purposes of doing a comparison test with the Mitsubishi Evo MR Touring. That turned out to be a surprisingly well-matched set of cars, and a hell of a good week of driving, to boot. This newer S4 experience didn’t do anything to disappoint me then, or to change my mind about loving Audi’s performance middle child.

Driven: 2011 Year In Review(s)

2011 has been a busy year in the Winding Road offices, with auto shows, new model launches, and the usual comings and goings of the automotive industry filling the virtual pages of our website. Even with all the activity, there has been a near-constant stream of automobiles filtering in and out of our parking lot, giving us no shortage of vehicular material to write about.

List: Ten Best Modern Day Bootlegging Vehicles

The illicit alcohol production and distribution industry of the 1930s and 1940s, coupled with the, let’s call it “irreverent,” spirit of some enterprising Southerners, helped to invent the concept of the moonshine-running car. Traditionally these vehicles were modified to offer the maximum amount of performance without changing the stock exterior appearance. A big trunk came in handy for loading in all the booze, too.

Quick Drive: 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan

This Subaru left me in a bit of an odd place. I have very little experience with the WRX (or its big brother, the STI), but a ton of experience in Mitsubishi’s Lancer Ralliart and Evo. After a few days behind the wheel, I was truly impressed with the value that the WRX represented, especially compared to the more expensive Ralliart.

List: Ten Things To Look Forward To In Gran Turismo 5

With its last installment released over five years ago, to say that Gran Turismo 5 has been long awaited is a bit of an under statement. The original Gran Turismo was one of the first console-based games to bring production car racing to the home, and helped create legends out of cars like the Nissan Skyline GT-R, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and Subaru Impreza WRX.

Blog: A Car Guy Lives With The Mitsubishi i-MiEV

“Rex Roy spends a week with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.” To those who know me, this would be an experiment on the order of Wife Swap. Producers of that wacky and twisted program intentionally find completely incompatible families and have the husbands swap spouses. Tension, irony, and humor ensue. Sometimes individuals learn acceptance, open-mindedness, and ways toward better living. Other times, disaster on the order of one-in-the-head, two-in-the-chest is narrowly averted.
