George W. Bush, a fierce competitor in the National Malapropism League, once said “Africa is a troubled nation.” Picking up on his lead, we might say, “BMW is a troubled car.” There is perhaps no better example of BMW’s recent struggles than the M5, a car that we want to be good and many of you want to be good, but just really isn’t as good as well all want it to be.
Road or track, complex corners or never-ending sweepers, the underlying element of goodness here is the M5’s stirring powertrain. The twin-scroll turbo-fed 4.4-liter V-8 engine puts out an astonishing 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque for its lucky operator to make use of—figures that are both significant upgrades from the last-generation’s V-10.
In the meantime, we’ve drawn up a list of what we think are the best BMWs for collectors in the here and now. We’ve got a wide range of vehicles here, with a variety of body types, along with prices and levels of availability. However, this list is hardly comprehensive. If there’s something that you think deserves to be on here (or something you think has no business here), then be sure to chime in down in the comments section. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
We like diesels. We also like products that wear BMW’s M badge. So naturally, we’re excited about BMW’s four newest M products: the M550d xDrive, M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d, and X6 M50d.
Think of performance sedans, and one name pops right to the forefront: the BMW M5. Originally launched in 1985, the M5 has been the benchmark for ultimate four-door performance. Over the past few years, though, the competition has become more intense, with new entries from Jaguar and Cadillac, and an stalwarts like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Thankfully for Bimmerphiles everywhere, though, a new M5 has arrived for 2012.
Loyal readers, feast your eyes on the BMW Concept M5. Like BMW did with the 6-Series, this concept gives us a very accurate idea of what the production M5 will look like when it appears.
Our spy photographer just sent these pictures of the updated BMW M5 testing at the Nürburgring. In these photos, we can see the M5 showing off its new front bumper.
With the launch of the sixth generation of the 5-Series, BMW has taken the time to celebrate the sale of 5.5 million total models over the course of five generations. As part of the celebration, some new images of past models have been released (which we have compiled in the gallery). BMW has also penned a piece on the history of the sedan which is sure to capture the hearts of Roundel-lovers everywhere.
