This is a major highlight of Monterey Car Week: Tommy Kendall driving an IMSA GTU Mazda RX-7 around Laguna Seca.
This video is from Race 1 of the 2016 Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup season held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The first race of each MX-5 Cup event uses a standing start. Here, WRR driver Tom Martin shows the advantages of using the outside line in Turn 2 on the first lap. Cars tend to stack up in the inside lane, leaving drivers on the outside a good chance to pick up places.
WRR driver Corey Rueth shows that lucky timing on a start is helpful. He then avoids several crashes by hanging back just a tick as cars try insane moves like four wide in T5.

Subaru is quite confident in the new WRX STI’s on-track abilities. So much so, in fact, that they invited us to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to put the new winged wonder through its paces around the course.

The twin-scroll turbo-fed 4.4-liter V-8 engine puts out an astonishing 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque for its lucky operator to make use of—figures that are both significant upgrades from the last-generation’s V-10.
After a day driving the new Mustang Boss 302 on and around the Laguna Seca race track, we’re prepared to nominate this latest Mustang as the newest member of the affordable but great. Just for reference, the other members of this august group are the Mitsubishi Evo X and the Mazda RX-8.
Our love of the Mazdaspeed3 can be traced back with a very exact timeline, as it first bloomed about 30 seconds after we ignited the engine on our maiden voyage in it. Back in October of 2006 we lauded the first generation Speed3 as, “The most complete front-drive compact yet,” and were left certainly stunned at the car’s combination of price and performance. Three years and one generation on, and we’re tempted to conclude that Mazda still has the best thing going in the hot hatch game, by a long shot, though clearly not a car that is all things to all people. Which is probably a good thing.
