The WR staff has had a whole lot of seat time in the standard Jetta TDI, thanks to our yearlong loan of that sedan during 2008-2009. I really enjoyed the basic version of the diesel sedan, so I was really looking forward to our loan of the hotter car.

We have just taken delivery of Volkswagen’s new Jetta TDI Cup Edition. Think of this special edition as a Jetta GLI with a diesel motor, instead of the 2.0T I-4. Our tester features a Cup-edition body kit, a six-speed DSG, sunroof, and the GTI’s signature Interlagos Plaid seats.

Driven: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sedan

As recently as just a few years ago, Volkswagen sold a wide range of diesel vehicles in the States. In fact, the company has a long history of selling oil-burners in the U.S. that dates back to the 1970s. These models were slowly jettisoned throughout the years due to stricter emissions laws, and by 2007, the Touareg V-10 was the only diesel Volkswagen that Americans could buy. However, in light of today’s higher fuel prices, the automaker is once again getting serious about broadening its turbo-diesel offerings in the States.
