GM Teases Cadillac ATS Sedan, Announces Production Plans For 2012

GM’s product renaissance is set to continue well into 2012, with the launch of two new Cadillac models. The ATS will be a dedicated competitor to other entry-level, rear-drive luxury sport sedans. As of right now, the ATS’s launch is planned for the summer of 2012, with production planned at the Lansing, Michigan Grand River Assembly Plant. We can’t see much from the teaser image, but smallest Caddy looks to refine the CTS’s design language, with similar sharp angles and creases. We’d expect to see the ATS debut at one of the big four American auto shows (LA, Chicago, New York, or Detroit).

GM’s Next Big SUV: Why Should We Expect Efficiency?

There is a special kinship between those who drive well and those who travel well. But it’s not based on a shared desire for freedom or mobility. It’s not even a mutual passion for exploration. It comes down to the eventual realization that excess weight, expressed as anything carried without cause, is our enemy. That enemy is what binds us, and we’re willing to give up creature comforts to rid ourselves of our earthly trappings. We will compromise in order to maximize the things that are really important. Whatever isn’t weight is only there because we need it.

Driven: 2012 Fisker Karma

Soon after this hotly anticipated first drive of the 2012 Fisker Karma at the infield handling circuit of California Speedway, we met up with Fisker Automotive principals Henrik Fisker and Bernhard Koehler on the floor at the recent Geneva Motor Show. They had various overseas publications opened to articles of their car strewn across a couple of back office coffee tables at their stand.

Quick Drive: 2011 GMC Sierra 2500

On the surface, the Sierra is a pretty decent truck. The Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 offers gobs of torque, while the six-speed Allison transmission smartly handles the shifting duties. While we really liked the 6.0-liter V-8 that we had in our Silverado HD, this is the motor to have.

First Look: 2012 Saab 9-4X

Saab has pulled back the curtain on its current offering into the world of crossover vehicles with the announcement of the new 9-4X. Blog: Buick Does It Again—2 Million Americans Won’t Even Know

A lot of photons have been shot at General Motors over the past 20 months or so, which I suppose comes with the territory when you run around with government bailout financiers. Beyond the cheap shots and ridiculously impractical advice, two themes seem to stand out and at least resonate a bit:

1. GM needs to build better cars
2. Ford is doing a better job

Quick Drive: 2010 Buick LaCrosse CX

The Buick LaCrosse is not a driver’s car. If you are looking to tackle your favorite backroads with any measure of enthusiasm, definitely look elsewhere than this car, especially with the four-pot engine. It was not designed with this sort of driving in mind.

Driven: 2011 Saab 9-5

Saab’s new Dutch owner Victor Muller is an adamant, outspoken kind of car guy. Exemplifying this sometimes impulsiveness, while we were talking with him near the airport he handed us the key fob to his pre-production 2011 Saab 9-5, and said we could have a spin in it so long as he was our constant passenger.
