The Ford Focus ST doesn’t appear too dissimilar from the standard Focus upon which it improves, but there is plenty to set it apart visually. It has its own front and rear fascia, with lots of aerodynamic touches, including a bold rear spoiler that looks great in person. The center-exit dual exhaust tips are easily distinguishable (and eyes of passersby will be drawn to this feature by the sound—more on that later). The fact that it has been lowered 10 millimeters gives it a more athletic pose. Of course, the subtle-yet-bright ST badging lets you know exactly what you’re looking at.
Why are we talking about an engine that’s only sold in Europe, though? Well, because it won’t be European-only for long. Ford has stated that the 1.0-liter EcoBoost will be sold in North America (and Asia, Oceania, and Africa) in 2013. The Dearborn-based OEM hasn’t mentioned what vehicles it’ll be available in, but based on the pair of lime green metallic Focus hatchbacks sitting in front of us at the Dearborn Proving Grounds, we think we have a good idea what the first American model to get the 1.0-liter will be.
It’s been a darn good year for the auto enthusiast. We’ve seen the launch of an all-new BMW 3-Series, the hugely anticipated Scion FR-S, a worked-over Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and a bevy of other new performance cars. One of the biggest names, that we’re stuck waiting on until the end of the year, is the all-new Ford Focus ST.
Back in 2002, the maniacs at Ford’s Special Vehicle Team took the three-door Focus hatchback and injected some guts, creating the Ford Focus SVT. The SVT lasted until 2005 when it was killed off, in favor of the mundane ST. Now, there is a new ST for 2012. Featuring a 246-horsepower EcoBoosted 2.0-liter I-4, the new ST will be on display at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.
