Video: POV Test Drive Of F-150 Diesel Pickup

If you tow a race car and trailer, but also use your pickup as a daily driver, you may prefer a half-ton pickup to larger trucks like the F-350 or the HD GM or RAM trucks.

WR TV: 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum Supercrew 4×4

This week we’re behind the wheel of what will likely be the tow vehicle of choice for many racers in the coming years – the all-new 2015 Ford F-150. Based on the Atlas Concept that Ford showed off at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, perhaps the biggest news about the new truck is the incredible diet it has gone on – one which has allowed the F-150 to shed 700 pounds of weight in the process (in certain configurations).

WR TV: 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor

Earlier this summer we got a chance to get behind the wheel of Ford’s latest performance-oriented pickup, the F-150 Tremor. With the new aluminum-bodied 2015 F-150 due to land in showrooms in just a few short months, we thought we’d give this hopped-up version of the outgoing model a thorough once-over before it goes the way of the dodo.

Preview: 2015 Ford F-150

Ford’s venerable full-size has been the best selling pickup truck in the United States for more than four decades. While altering a winning formula is almost always risky endeavor, with mounting fuel efficiency standards looming, Ford had no choice but to shake things up significantly for the all-new 2015 F-150. Fortunately, it appears the engineers and bean counters did their homework on this one, as the new F-150 looks to be a big step forward for Ford’s full-size.

Secondhand Gems: $30,000 Truckin’

We’ll consider style, toughness, guts, and since many trucks now serve as primary family vehicles, we’ll look at interior appointments as well. That means everything on the list will be a full-blown four-door pickup. Everything will have four-wheel drive, and though flat-out performance isn’t a key point in this contest, we’ll still be aware of machines that make us grin. We’ll stick with half- and three-quarter ton trucks since they represent the majority of truck sales, and we’ll showcase both gasoline and diesel options.

Driven: Ford’s 5.0-Liter V-8

While the exhaust note of the Mustang was classic, deep, burly muscle car, it tended to sound a bit peaky in the higher part of the rev range. The F-150, though, sounded best north of 3500 rpm, with a harder-charging sound as we accelerated up the rev range. We know that Ford pipes exhaust noise into the cabin of the Mustang, increasing the acoustic experience of acceleration. But, after our drive of the F-150, we wouldn’t be surprised to find out if the same thing was going on.

List: Top Ten Longest Range Vehicles

With the departure of our BMW X5 xDrive35d, we began talking about vehicles that not only offered decent-to-good fuel economy, but also packed massive gas tanks to allow outrageous distances between fill ups. We set a minimum of 600 miles per tank, and got our numbers by multiplying the gas tank size by the EPA estimated highway mileage. Here are the results.
