Six years, hundreds of (better) car reviews, thousands of website postings, millions of written words, a couple of promotions, and an uncountable number of car-induced stupid grins later, I find myself writing this letter to you all about how I’m leaving the Winding Road team. That 9-5 story may have taken me longer to grind out than this goodbye will, but it’s a far more difficult task I do today.
Our former Editor-In-Chief and pillar of automotive journalism, David E. Davis, Jr., died this week. His influence lives on, especially in the form of elegantly crafted words about the cars and great driving that were his passion. Here, collected from back issues of Winding Road, are some of the timeless thoughts David E. shared with his readers.
Another video to remember David E. Davis, Jr. In this short, the man drives “some of the best winding roads in the country” in an electric blue 2008 Audi RS4. Made in 2007, this video combines Davis’ eloquent style with some stunning driving footage.
As we remember David E. Davis, Jr., we would like to share this video wherein our former Editor-In-Chief sets the tone for future of Winding Road and talks of his passion for driving great cars on great roads. This video was made in 2006.
David E. Davis Jr. was a man who not only told stories, but left some amazing ones in his wake. With the news of his passing yesterday, many members of the automotive media have already written and published obituaries online. And, while a collection of obituaries is usually a pretty grim read, there are so many people out there who knew DED, with so many great stories about his life to tell that these initial write-ups are really notable glimpses into a great life, well lived.
The new Ford Flex arrives into our market at a time when consumers are downsizing from their large SUVs but still need room for the spouse, kids, dogs, etc. The retro-wagon styling of the Flex may steer some customers away, but we rather liked the styling of our Limited AWD test car. Inside, plush materials and high-tech gadgets make this family-hauler a real win. Overall, the Flex proved to be a big step forward for the Ford Motor Company and we hope their future products go in this direction, as well.
One of the more ubiquitous sights on the American Road is the Ford Ranger pickup. It is handsome, in a hard-working, rectilinear way, and you don’t see many that appear to have suffered neglect or abuse. Now the Ford Escape (and Mercury Mariner) SUVs join the Ranger pickup in its ubiquity. Not only do you see a lot of them, and not only do they look good, they are good. They may be the class-leader of the compact SUV category.
