Comparison Test: 2012 BMW X5M vs. 2012 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

There are a lot of things that make these cars match up well, in spite of the price. The BMW X5M and Cadillac CTS-V Wagon are very powerful. They both represent their respective brands’ ultimate fusion of performance and utility. Each is impressive in its ability to get our heart pounding and put a smile on our face. But one of these haulers is clearly the more engaging, more thrilling driver’s vehicle.

List: The Top Ten Scariest Cars We Drove In 2011

Don’t misunderstand the title of this list; when we say “scary” we mean it in a generally positive way. After all, when you judge each vehicle you drive based largely on involvement, getting a little scared is par for the course

Secondhand Gems: Big Horsepower

When the 2013 Shelby GT500 goes on sale next year it will pack 650 horsepower, making it the most powerful V-8 production car in the world. It handily slams the door on the General’s new 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1 in terms of power, and even manages to nip Chevrolet’s other horsepower hero, the supercharged ZR1. The Dodge boys have nothing remotely close to the Shelby’s new power in V-8 trim, and even the forthcoming 2013 Viper (of which details are still shrouded in mystery) may not pack an equally powerful punch. The 2013 GT500 will have more than double the power of not one, but two Mustang GTs made just two years ago, and it would take five and a half of Ford’s popular Fiesta subcompact to equal the guts of just one 2013 Shelby. And don’t forget, it’ll still be a street-friendly car with a full factory warranty. If we’re on the brink of a major energy crisis spurred by diminishing oil reserves, at least we’re going out with a bang.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS

I’ll admit, based on my experiences behind the wheel of the Cadillac CTS-V, I expected a little bit better from the V-6-powered CTS. It wasn’t that I was disappointed by its abilities as a luxury sedan, or by the level of equipment, but that from a handling perspective the CTS-V was so much better than our tester.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V

Unfortunately for me, I have, far and away, the longest commute of anyone at the Winding Road office in Michigan, especially when it comes to the afternoon rush. Spanning 45 miles, my drive home averages 90 minutes. On a good day, I can make it in an hour. On a bad day, it can be anywhere from two to three hours, depending on traffic and construction (winter is an entirely different issue, where I’ve spent upwards of eight hours commuting for an eight-hour workday). So I spend a lot more time in stop-and-go traffic than either John or Seyth, and therefore, I appreciate a gearbox like the one on the CTS-V just a little bit more than they do.

First Look: 2012 BMW M5

Think of performance sedans, and one name pops right to the forefront: the BMW M5. Originally launched in 1985, the M5 has been the benchmark for ultimate four-door performance. Over the past few years, though, the competition has become more intense, with new entries from Jaguar and Cadillac, and an stalwarts like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Thankfully for Bimmerphiles everywhere, though, a new M5 has arrived for 2012.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

The greatest thing about the CTS-V Wagon isn’t the way it performs; it’s the reaction it generates on the faces of people you take for rides, pass on the freeway, and cruise by on the street.

Quick Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

The CTS Coupe may not rip as hard as the V version, but that’s just fine. It is still really good. The rear wheels will still break loose just a little during takeoff, and power seems to come to a crescendo in the middle part of the rev range. The ride is still comfortable and smooth, with relative quiet, but when pushed a bit, the CTS is not afraid to get aggressive. Shifts could come a little quicker from the steering-wheel-mounted buttons—and I’d still prefer proper paddles—but it’s not a slouch, and will shift cleanly through the gears as long as you pay close attention, or just let it shift on its own.

Detroit 2011: Cadillac Shows Off Its New Racer In The Motor City

First Look: Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Race Car

We normally focus our coverage on street-legal cars here at Winding Road, but every so often a race version of one of our favorites comes along and we feel compelled to cover it. Such is the case with this, the Cadillac CTS-V race car, which is destined to start competing in the 2011 SCCA World Challenge GT Series.

Blog: Is The Jaguar XJ A Panamera Beater?

Well, folks, after a day spent driving the new XJL and the Panamera back to back, I’m here to tell you that the luxury sedan market has new players intent on upsetting the proverbial apple cart. As Seyth indicated in his coverage of the new XJ, Jaguar is back in a big way. As a measure of just how far Jaguar has progressed, my recent time in the XJL suggests that Porsche, more than BMW or Mercedes, is the required comparison. Lexus really doesn’t merit mention in this company. How times change.

Driven: 2010 Cadillac CTS-V

The cabin of the 2010 Cadillac CTS-V spoke to the nature of the car. The gear selector and steering wheel were clad in suede, begging to be held. The instrument panel shone brightly, with the small boost gauge in particular catching our eye with a promise of some supercharged fun. Prominent contrasting stitching on the dash looked classy and bold. The Recaro seats, though totally adjustable, held us firmly in a position of attention, the bolsters prodding us into alertness. The V-badged Caddy reminded us a bit of the Concorde jet—sleek, luxurious, supremely fast, yet odd to behold. There is no question, even before firing up the CTS-V, that this is a driver’s car.

First Look: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Is What We’ve Been Waiting For

While the tagline of “The Caddy That Zigs” may not have worked too well for the all-but-forgotten Catera sedan from the late 1990s, we think it will be a very appropriate description for this hot little number. Cadillac just recently unveiled the new CTS Coupe bodystyle, and only one month after the two-door’s official debut, we now have a much-anticipated V-badged variant, set to go on sale in the summer of 2010.

First Look: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

The speculation surrounding the Cadillac CTS Coupe finally comes to an end today. The official images and details of the two-door CTS have been released and the production car will hit showrooms in the spring of 2010. And while the coupe might look a lot like the sedan and wagon variants that we’ve already driven, it’s important to know that only the instrument panel, console, front fenders, grille, and headlamps are shared with the sedan. The coupe rides on the same wheelbase, but is shorter by two inches and rides two inches lower to the ground.
