Secondhand Gems: $20,000 Family-Sized Fun
In our search for responsible, affordable family machines that aren’t completely mind numbing to drive we’ve rounded up a pair of crossovers and the aforementioned minivan. They all rank well in terms of safety equipment and crash worthiness. They all offer three-row seating. They all achieve at least an EPA-highway rating of 24 miles per gallon. And at approximately $20,000, they’re affordable by the masses.
Friday Video: Flip This Car Edition, Racing The White Whale
In the last edition of Flip This Car, Chris Smith took his 1994 Buick Roadmaster (AKA The Beast, AKA Moby Dick) out racing. Apparently a master of both over and understeer, Chris may not have fared that well in the actual rallycross standings, but it’s hard not to count this a major moral victory for grandpa-wagons the world-over. Sure, a few orange cones had to give up their lives for the glory of the Buick, but we can live with that.
The Stig, In Pumpkin Form
Winding Road contributor Chris Smith (“Flip This Car,” “Secondhand Gems”) showed us this jack-o-lantern, burning bright with the image of The Stig, from BBC’s Top Gear. Carved by an unnamed friend of Mr. Smth, it sure looks spooky in front of that Ford Taurus SHO.

Chris Smith stopped by the WR office after the SHO convention last week. He was kind (foolish) enough to let me take my first ever test drive of a gen-one SHO, and I’m glad he did.
